The "cost" is not monetary, the cost of curving the bottom or top is you'll have much less space for useful ports. So, I commend any manufacturer prioritising usefulness over bling-bling. When they can make the actual lip of the actual OLED panel narrow enough on all sides to cater for a truly bezel-free phone, then you'll see a lot more manufacturers doing that.
Apple has a knack for not caring about what their buyers likes, and sometimes it backfires massively. Dropping all ports just for some cosmetics. Even when they don't have to. Current phones has plenty of room for multiple jacks and connectors, which is why you get that on most Android devices. In comparison, Apple's PC's. Apple effectively killed their own laptop market share by thinking they could sell single-port laptops at $1,500. Which is why they're now in panic mode, attempting a reverse Windows 10 hoping people wants to play Angry Birds on their PC's. You know, because device convergence has always been Apple's forte. Just ask what Jim Crook as always said about that! ;)

It's doesn't seem accidental at all.
It is simply following footsteps of it's sibling One+. Creating hype and raising price for crappy gadgets. Soon we will have some 'accidental' leak by some OPPO for it's upcoming trash.

The proof to that is to count the number of fairly cheap phones with curved side edges. Curving the OLED panel doesn't add that much of a cost. I think they just didn't manage to get the sensors to work properly through the OLED panel, so the options are to keep some sort of ugly notch or a narrow chin for them. The plus side of this is that they'll have an easier job fitting a crucial thing like the physical headphone jack.

NEX with SD710 will not have UD fp sensor and no periscope cam too from rumor I heard. The front cam will be on the front chin and fp sensor on the back. At least the bezel less feeling of the phone stay intact.
