in paraguay since prepaid cell phone service was launched..beeping or lost calls..are sooo comon like since 1997 ive recieved lost calls...or beeping...in south america is sooooo comon..like my copatriot from brasil said...its true..annoy ur friend @ 3 am its sooooo true...my friends leave me lost calls just to me to callback and say fyou! and hang up....@ 2, 3 and 4 am....its like a game...over here

Hi,, im from argentina, and here in my country all the people do this,, its an easy and fast way to advice another person.for example if you want to met a friend,at that moment, just beep him, and he would know that you are searching him.In south america is very popular and old

I bet if they could figure out a way, network providers would surely charge "beeping"..!
By the way, it is common in Turkey too, we call it "ringing" - ie. ring me when you're ready..!

lol...over her in south america..especially en mi country where i live..called paraguay...flashing, beeping.. is called "lost call" or like we say in spanish "llamada perdida"..its like soooo annoying...when somebody only has 2 seconds of call credit he or she uses it to make lost calls to a person with intention of a call back...but over here u can request credit via up to 5 free credit requests to a person or friend who might have credit..( we use it to express when somebody flashes us to say we dont have credit either..or a pre agreed message..like im here pick me up.....but the lost calls are sooooo comun over her...its allfull...

Well I guess in most countries it is well known and often used. I have been wondering if it is popular in other countries than mine (Poland :D) and as I can see there are a few countries that did not know about it :P And for the record, here in Poland there are lots of names for it, the most popular are "puszczac sygnal" (it would be translated "send signal" or after reading this article "send beep") and "puszczac strzalke" ("send arrow"). And i believe I've even heard someone call it "puszczac baka" which means ... "to fart" :P

It's called "missed call" in India.. Indian ppl take the maximum advantage of it i think.. Broke friends leaving "missed calls" on my phone all day long..

In India We the school/collage going guys are the biggest people who use this over here it's simply called A "MISSED" because that's what is shown on the phone screen.....like my girl gives me like...50 misscalls a day during the day it says that she is thinking of me ...during night it's usually for me 2 call her back...heehehe

haha..cant believe ppl found out that just by now...Here in Brazil its so common as drink water, sometimes crucial too..here we call that "disturb my friends late in the night".

Of course beeping is not new.
The main thing in the Reuters news is that 30 percent of all
calls in Africa are beeping. I doubt this is the case in Canada for example.

Well, I think it is absolutely normal to beep when the other side is informed what exactly you are calling for. For example: Beep me when you a ready...:). The starting price for a call is the same for the first 15 or even more seconds, so why to speak 5 seconds instead of beep?
It is more logically and common then african. And it is snobbish to call this practice african :)...
