Samsung's Exynos 9820 to come with tri-cluster, 2+2+4 CPU

11 July 2018
If true, this will be the first Exynos chipset with more than two core clusters.

i think they wil make 2 versions as always, exynos version wil probably get 2 x m4 x.xxghz + 2 x m4 x.xxghz + 4 x cortex.... they will probably improve battery life as this is a big problem right now.

Hmmm.... We already know that the M3 Mongoose core can squeeze out a very impressive 3.6-4k points in geekbench... and assuming the upgrade (I don't even know how incremental the upgrade would be ^^;) is... let's sat 25%? we're talking about a chip that can FINALLY beat the A12. However. I am certain samsung will be smart and won't overclock the A76 beyond 2.5 GHz just like Huawei did... so we're talking about 4800 (?)/3400/1300 preformance segments.

AnonD-594740, 15 Jul 2018"1 A76 + 7 A55 is not guaranteed to perform better then 4+4... moreFor most (65%) tasks people do on an Android device a 1.5GHz Quadcore Cortex A55 can do it rather well. Other times (35%) tasks require something that's better. And something like a 2.0GHz Dualcore Cortex A73 will suffice. And you can make do sufficiently with cheap TSMC 16nm lithography.

What most people fail to realise is that, sure its going to be 40% weaker in synthetic benchmarks, but in practice its only going to be 5-15% slower than something like: 2.0GHz Quadcore A55 + 2.5GHz Quadcore A75 on the expensive Samsung 7nm lithography. And yet, despite the measly 10% performance deficiency, its going to cost about 20% cheaper (or more). That's the route the chip manufacturers in China take such as Allwinner, AMLogic, RockChip, MediaTek, etc etc etc.

And even better is the solution ARM came up with: DynamIQ.
You can use the same 14nm lithography to get a 3.0GHz Solocore Cortex A76 + 2.0GHz Sevencore Cortex A55. And this setup should yield you 50% weaker in synthetic benchmarks, but only around 10-20% slower in practice. Yet its going to cost about 30% cheaper.

Again, to reiterate the aforementioned SoC will be nicely low-cost, great in PRACTICAL tasks for real-world scenarios, but it will suck very bad at SYNTHETIC benchmarks. Therefore a SoC like this is terrible in terms of marketing and selling devices (despite being the most advanced/balanced SoC objectively speaking). So far only Xiaomi is investigating to build such a SoC, but we shall see in the next 6-18 months if any of the OEMs are ballsy enough to ship a smartphone chipset with terrible marketing, great real-world performance, for budget $200 phones.

One A76 would lead the single core score even further without adding significant more area.

Possibility, ability, capability and practicality are 4 different factors which are comparable in mathematics, not daily use or better to say physics.

Driving from possibility to ability need years to reach there, so does more or less to reach other factors.

4 for Snapdragon 805 was well fit.
4+4 for Snapdragon 810 was too tight.

2+2 for Snapdragon 820/821 was well fit.
4+4 for Snapdragon 835 makes its way to the competition and 845 crowned the multitasking.
850 overclocked for desktop class usage and Snapdragon 1000, which is why 2-Cluster 4+4 Core configuration reaches its highest point.

1 A76 + 7 A55 is not guaranteed to perform better then 4+4 A53 in running daily tasks smoothly.

                      Elaboration:
I think phone SoCs should stop somewhere soon. Let's face it, GPUs of yesteryear could push 30fps of most games on hd screens, now they still can on full HD. Graphics should be as good as possible but shouldn't be PC-grade since we're using a much smaller screen.
I would like to see a point where flagships could do all the tasks adequately while costing as much as they did in 2010, around $500.
Always trying to push more transistors into a plate smaller than a person's pupil isn't helping that happen any time soon.

I'm an advocate of full-metal phones because is can dissipate heat better in addition to their durability.

I at least hope Samsung would step up and make a stainless-steel phone instead of glass sandwiches.

                                      2010:
                                      Samsung Hummingbird = 1 Cluster - 1 Core - 1GHz
                                      Galaxy S, Wave S8500
                                      2013:
                                      Samsung Exynos 5 - 5410 = 2 Cluster - 8 Cores - 1.6GHz
                                      Galaxy S4, Meizu MX3
                                      2018~19:
                                      Samsung Exynos ? - ???? (Would be) 3 Cluster - 8 Cores - 3.0+ GHz

This means something important to consider:

In order not to fall behind other rivals, do something new and future proof.

2010's 1-Cluster SoC started from 1 Core, next was 2 core and final version was 4 Core.

This means 1, 2 or 4 can perform well inside a SoC by Samsung criteria.

2013's 2-Cluster started from 32-bit 4+4 core and moved to 64-bit. configurations were either 4+4 or 4+2 which means 1 Core was neither good nor efficient in order to make something like 4+1 or 2+1.

This rumor about 3-Cluster and 2+2+4 core configuration can be a hint by Samsung's R&D in order to try 12-Core at max in upcoming years to feed more resource hungry hardware, OS and apps.

Possible Core configuration in that matter regarding DynamIQ:
                                      2+2+4
                                      Next up: 4+2+4
                                      Then: 4+4+4
Which in this over saturated market, it can stand above other competitors by number, Benchmark scores, but slightly above others in real life usage.

PC's were going down, but some tricks helped them to survive for next 7 years.
If manufacturers are not aware, they must listen to the siren which indicate the 2025 fall of smartphones.

                                      Twin SoC,
                                      Tri-cluster,
                                      Desktop-Level performance in pocket,
                                      512+GB internal,
                                      16+GB RAM Support SoC
are good way to extend their success for coming years, but not sufficient to attract customers.

Unification is what Virtualization era need and those manufacturers must do what Google did in 2010. If they follow Microsoft's steps, they would not go any further than the original surface foot steps.

Microsoft found failures and reconstructed its roadmap.
Apple is following with start of app store unification.
Google is under Big names influence in the market, so, what Samsung do, directs Google's Android ecosystem, success or failure will affect the OS directly.

3-Cluster is a good idea but will be better is they do not think that they are the only thinker and others are some illogical people out there.

Maybe some surprise in terms of performance as well as endurance. Will be great.
