Weekly poll results: wide cameras still beat telephoto ones as monochrome ones fade

15 July 2018
Monochrome has fallen out of fashion - people no longer feel monochrome sensors are needed to get good low-light shots and instead prefer tele and wide-angle cameras.

Socalteknique, 15 Jul 2018Yeah...I'm pretty sure Huawei knows what they're doing. Bok... moreHope they increase it again now that they have competition or I might consider a other manufacturer.

Just make the main lens wider than it is. Ultrawide on some lg phones give a fisheye effect. So go wide but not as wide. Panarama mode would take care of the rest. im a big fan of ultrawide but not to the extent it distorts the image. Not ultra wide just extra wide would be great i reckon for most shots.

The use of monochrome is questionable does it really improve low light as claimed and imo unless you're a tourist or live somewhere with beautiful landscape you will rarely use wide angle but I agree normal+telephoto+wide angle is the perfect combo

Anonymous, 15 Jul 2018When you need to take more view into the frame and without ... moreWide angle and telephoto adapter lens can both be bought separately, and they are fairly cheap. I don't get the need for dedicated cameras for those functions. Monochrome at least does its job, but Huawei didn't exactly make the best use of it. Sony demonstrates how well a monochrome sensor works with the XZ2 Premium.

Nicolas F, 15 Jul 2018Maybe it's about larger pixels? No. you need a LARGER SENSOR for that. not a couple sensor... Sad that most dual cam smartphone that uses smaller sensor to save some space, Sony and Huawei P20 is a good example that don't follow this...

I think the wide-angle needs to become the primary camera.

The telephoto, and macro-cameras can be achieved very cheaply and easily by just changing the lens (eg $5 accessory). The black-and-white shots can be achieved easily through the software. And we've now gotten very good at bokeh with a single camera. So I find it very hard to justify a second camera at all.

                        ...
....I guess there is one solution, where you can have TWO identical primary rear cameras. It can make your phone symmetrical so that you can use it upside-down or upside-up. And if you separate then a decent distance, say 80mm/3.2", then you can achieve a good pupillary distance. This would mean 3D Photos and 3D Videos can be achieved. Not to mention all the utilities for AR/VR applications. And even more interesting is if you also had two cameras on the front, the combined four cameras can actually record 360' Videos.

360' Videos are great because they are a Time Machine. As an example; You can easily set it up on the coffee table in your living room, and record the birthday party of your daughter. And years later you can wear a VR headset like the Valve Vive, and watch the video in-person as if you were there. It would also be great for weddings, card games, gatherings, or many many other instances. On top of this, you can actually record a 360' Video and save it... at the same time you could use the recording of only ONE camera which can acts as a separate 2D video which can also be used to share on social media/YouTube with others, or even simply to view it on the handset later in 2D mode.

My guess is that Apple, Google, and Microsoft are going to completely miss this point.... and its going to take a talented engineer in his garage to put this out. And he would become rich and famous for it, just like GoPro in the ActionCam industry. There was zero reasoning (besides incompetence) why other companies like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Google, Facebook didn't innovate and capitalise here, only to miss the train for a startup like GoPro did.

TheGoldenMellifluous, 15 Jul 2018I'm wondering, is the advanced sensor meaning and is the on... morethe monochrome sensor is use full and does help the ISO Rating on photos, thats why the xz2 premium has the best low light video recording/photo abilities, but sony are lucky because they have a wide angle lens anyway, so its the best of both on the xz2 premium

I really hope brands can come out with something new for a smartphone's secondary camera, like thermal imaging

mc camera is actually useless, because most ppl edit the pictures in snapseed/lr/ps and makes them mc that way. ive never tried the big wide angle on a phone, since i dont like lg, but i love it on my canon. zoom isnt that good, and can again be done better over edit. wide angle and macro lense would maybe be a better solution on phones.

I'm wondering, is the advanced sensor meaning and is the one that implemented in Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium, where it combines Bayer-filtered Mosaic Memory-Stacked RGB Sensor with Monochrome Sensor in Aube Fusion Instant ISP or something anything else of it?

Funny thing is, sony created lens that are widest(out of normal - wide cameras), great for low light, hi res - so good enough for zoom, all with one color sensor(not counting monochrome, because it does not help noise in color output).
All with best tech in camera and ISP. Still, someone with visually better performance, multiple cheap cameras, gets more attention.
Though using multiple ones is better in slim phone, its having all but in less quality or one with best. Because quality And resolution matters, (real) color resolution.

I'm pretty sure you'll instantly love the wide angle lens once you used it. Btw, just giving opinion after all.

Nobody really cares about that portrait thing. If you‘ve been making holidays in a different country as a tourist in the last couple of weeks, you would appreciate a zoom lens.

„An Advanced Sensor“ makes no Sense to me. If you want „an advanced sensor“, you can just include this in the first lens and leave the second lens out.
