Does anyone make Gibibit ( 2^30 bits ) or natural multiples thereof ram chips anymore?

Anonymous, 17 Jul 2018You seem a little too optimistic here. This is only about t... moreNope.
On average power is used most by the:
- screen (thirsty, used ~15% of the time)
- CPU (usually Cortex A55 active)
- GPU (most thirsty unit, used rarely)
- 4G-LTE (thirsty during active up/downloads)
- RAM (always active, getting more and more used with each new Android API)
- Other components (rarely used, and/or not power thirsty)
The power-draw of the RAM is very important. It affects when stressed/use, especially when playing games (eg Asphalt) and recording videos (especially 4K). And it affects the phone when the screen is off (saves the Apps into RAM for fast-switching) and for Active Background Tasks.
So you see, a modern phone that can achieve a "Screen on Time" of 6-8 hours can comfortably last 3 days with moderate use and screen off. So if they can decrease RAM power drain, it will affect screen off power usage immensely, and decrease active usage too. So yes, it IS possible to get 5-days battery life in the near future with a device that has ~10 hours of Screen on Time.
...not that it will happen, as the likes of Samsung will reduce the battery capacity from 4,000mAh to 2,500mAh in order to make the device from 8mm's to 5mm's thinness. However, people will forget that now the device will become even MORE fragile than before.

It doesnt matter if you use your phone or not, the consumption is always the same. And matters more now that phones are shipping with absurds amounts of RAM (8GB), and more RAM means more consumption.

Even if the power consumption of the chips is 90% less than the last generation it would have next to no effect on battery life. The screen, even just the always on one, consumes far more than the memory.

FreezeGame, 17 Jul 2018Oh, Samsung, you're spoiling us! Always pushing technology ... moreThis is a standard man.
Everybody else will come up with the same chips, its just that they are waiting for the standard to be actually complete, as this is a prototype, not a consumer grade to shipping.

In the meantime, Intel struggles to deliver Processors with LPDDR4 support, so Apple had to switch to regular DDR4

Kangal, 17 Jul 2018This isn't actually that much faster than LPDDR4 performanc... moreYou seem a little too optimistic here. This is only about the power consumption of memory chips which I believe is much lower than the energy eaten by screens or cpu's.
Also, "3-day battery life" ? When I have a phone which always last until the end of the day Im already very happy!

This isn't actually that much faster than LPDDR4 performance, just read it carefully.
However, it is still a great improvement because its using much less battery. It might technically be possible to push battery life from the current 3-day mark (S9+/P20 Pro/1+6) to maybe 5-day* battery life.
However, this isn't going to be released with the Galaxy S10, or even the Galaxy X.
The standard isn't even finalised, they basically have produced the prototype only a couple days ago. However, early 2020 (Galaxy S11) seems highly likely.
*knowing Samsung, they will return it back to 3-day battery life by decreasing the battery capacity from 4,000mAh to 2,000mAh with the justification of shaving the thinness down from 8mm's to 5mm's.
