Making it a premium phone in that particular segment , In Price sensitive markets like India people Prefer Value for Money phones like Xiaomi for Each segment.
For Eg : Redmi Note 5 Vs Nokia 5 , Redmi Note 5 Pro Vs Nokia 7 , Mi Mix 2 Vs Nokia 8 Sircocco.
People will always prefer the Xiaomi alternative in each Segment , Other than the very few people that prefer quality and longevity.

The market share that companies have in China or US isn't gonna grow much, whereas India is up for takes. Not to mention with the cheap data rates people are using Internet more than ever. These newcomers, people who've just gotten access to the internet, is the segment companies can get a foothold in. I agree it isn't a market for premium devices. But it is currently the most sought after market for phone manufacturers.

India isn't a good market for premium phones in any price category , Findings from International Data Corporation (IDC) India and Counterpoint Research put the range of ASP [ average selling price] between $157 and $144.
However, ASPs in India are still among the lowest among major markets and half of China, which stands at $301 and a third of US’ at $460.

The notch design should have been better! It really looks ugly when compared to other notch designs when even notches are ugly smh!

I mean sure I understand the notch trend, and sure you can have chin 'cause you still haven't figured out how to fold the display, but a notch AND a forehead? not having that top bezel is the whole point of the notch.
