Galaxy S9 and S9+ update adds 480fps super slow motion mode, but with a catch

19 July 2018
480fps doubles the recording time compared to the original 960fps model. The update has other changes too, including the July security patch.

Zenodroid, 20 Jul 2018Why, is it 4k? 1080p wasn't 4k last time I checked. But it definitely looks better than 720p on my 1080p TV which looks just fine from a normal viewing distance.

Shanti Dope, 20 Jul 2018My idea for super slow motion: They keep the same DRAM e... moreThat makes no sense.
It would be better to simply make the primary memory larger. However, the in-sensor cache is the same type as the CPU Cache you find on processors like AMD's Ryzen. If you don't know, this is quite volatile and very expensive. Then there's a dedicated DRAM as well, a design created by Sony's Exmor division and licensed to Samsung's Isocell department.

So the current solution is to use it up fully to record that 0.2 seconds on the cache, whereas the earlier 2.4 seconds and later 2.4 seconds are recorded in standard 30fps to the RAM. That gives you a 5-second video, with a super-slowmotion portion in the middle, before the footage is passed to the phone's SoC.

So what shall happen in the future?
The in-sensor cache gets a bump-up from 16KB to 64KB. This increases bandwidth. The in-sensor DRAM gets bumped from 512MB to 1024MB. This increases storage length. And lastly increase the camera's sensor size from ~7mm's to ~9mm's. This allows more detail in each shot. Overall, you could expect super-slowmo coming in late 2018 where you're getting true-720p resolution (rather than upscaled) and a recording of 960fps for a full 1-second. When played back it becomes a 30-second clip of slow-mo, which is adequate for most amateurs.

Shanti Dope, 20 Jul 2018My idea for super slow motion: They keep the same DRAM e... moreWith budget on mind, I don't think we'd be able to record 1+ seconds before 2020 unless a technological breakthrough happens.

My idea for super slow motion:

They keep the same DRAM embedded on the sensor, but make a connection of that DRAM to another DRAM that is attached to the motherboard, in which light information can also be transferred to it as fast as the same information gets transported to the main DRAM itself embedded on the sensor.
Long sequence said, it's meant to expand the memory size of the sensor in order to keep more light information from the sensor.

Kiyasuriin, 19 Jul 2018I agree. I saw a 5000 FPS of a blink and WOAH. It was gorgeous. Wait till you get a phone that can take in enough light else it's not gonna happen for now. Sony is the one i can see making this happen but i know they'll always fark it up in another way lol

Xperia Premium of 2019 will have DRAM inside both sensors to allow 1920fps@1080 and 960fps@4K..

S10 will be stuck with 720p that looks 540p

A good practice is looking up professional slow-mo cameras. When you see them you'd understand.

                                    Long version:
They have super fast sensors and processors made especially for this purpose only. Fast memories and storage. Heating is not an issue with them, and they cost a small fortune.
Making this happen in a phone in these days would make it cost even more than a professional camera.
For now 0.2 is sufficient to wow people. And will gradually increase over years.

Professional slow-mo cameras do have a lot of storage and processing power and are bigger than an old camera. We need at least 5 years to be able to do that in a phone sized device.
