Currently I can only find used tab S3 but this comes with its own set of risks.
Tab 8's screen is comfortable from reading distance (at 30+ cm the pixels are barely discernible), but if my memory helps me it wasn't a very good TFT. While my budget tab had a decent IPS. however, I still don't recommend chinese replicas because I think I just had luck on my side :D

The screen had to have a poor resolution because you can't push the SD410 higher than HD. It had the standard 4:3 Web resolution, 1024x768.
Not sure about the price though. Current Tab S2 is at 500CAD (same as launch price), Tab S3 is at 800CAD. Only way this can go is the Tab S2 9.7 being phased out, Tab S3 takes it's price, Tab S4 getting a 700-800CAD price (I wish 500-600)

What I didn't like was the unimpressive screen of the original tab a8, it just didn't seem that sharp, it was a tad on the thick side and for the price at that time, I didn't want to pay more for less.
The tab a10 was my next choice, but it was pricier and seemed sluggish even when the gallery staff were previewing it in front of me. So I paid less than quarter the price for an 8" Xtouch F81 which had a seemingly better screen (same resolution, better colors and viewing angles) but abysmal battery life. It still performs well to this day (reading books, PC remote and screen cast, and casual gaming) and I still think of it as a bargain.
I'm currently in between buying a new phone or tab. I sure hope the new tab A or S line have better pricing, as the specs have obviously improved, or I might just end up buying another cheap replica XD

I'm saying the last A tabs weren't worth the price.
And I do have an iPad replica with two 4000 mAh batteries stuck on the back for longer battery life :)

First Gen was worse than my 5-year-old Chinese iPad replica. Which still performs quite well at 25% the price.

Lenovo and huawei produce decent cheaper tablets.
Microsoft has a cheap surface now which fits perfectly with the of or laptop, and iPads do better with Macs. There's also chromebooks/tablets which perform well and are much cheaper.
So in my opinion, if the pricing is not right, Samsung is fighting a losing game here.

Can't they just put the fingerprint scanner on the power button at least?? I hope Tab S5 adds ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner which will debut in Galaxy S10 next year.

Omission of fps on a tablet is not big of a deal IMO. It would cause some inconvenience but would not be as bad if it was a phone.

If they manage to delay it couple of months more, it will have a 2 years old chipset at launch.

But i'm pretty sure it's going to cast about the same as the iPad pro, so about 700$, just like the tab S3 was, if not more

I hope the price didn't inflate much since the tab S3.
