nothing-, 29 Jul 2018I agree on the software side, Google should require all OEM... moreYou said pretty much what I was going to about the software support:

Google should require & help all OEM's to have a minimum of 3 years major OS upgrade and a minimum of 5 years support for security patches.
If you don't support your customers then they won't support you.
This should be easier with Project Treble.

Farewell & maybe goodbye to HTC, before my S6 I had the HTC Desire HD, but updates were poor & it lagged, I almost never throw good money after bad.
Having said that they were good innovators, Boom Sound etc, & their engineers & patents will continue on with Google Pixel 3/XL.

Sony guys, some of you seem a bit touchy lately, you're  still in the game with your Xperia's so chill out & enjoy.

Thanks Ivan for your overview of 2018 up 'til now.

I don't agree that phones should not have multiple cameras if they aren't wide angle or Tele.
As long as they do something to improve the imaging, that is the important bit.

JohnW1981, 29 Jul 2018Why has Sony received no mention in any of these articles? ... moreIt's obvious, isn't it? Sony is less than irrelevant.

JohnW1981, 29 Jul 2018A lot of their problems are also down to poorly optimised s... moreActually the problem is poor quality hardware.
The reason for bad battery life is mostly that power hungry lcd they use.
Software can ameliorate the situation to some extent but it can not fix poor hardware.

Why has Sony received no mention in any of these articles? 2018 is a significant year. They've made the greatest strides instead of playing it safe repeatedly with incremental upgrades (new design, aspect ratio, camera processing) but also been controversial (no headphone jack, finger print reader moved to side step their legal issues in U.S) Opinion between long standing Sony users maybe mixed but why is nobody else talking about them?

r33fd, 29 Jul 2018HTC situation saddens me as my first smartphone was from th... moreA lot of their problems are also down to poorly optimised software at launch. One M9 and 10 needed updates to improve battery life and camera performance, U12 inconsistent haptic feedback. Trouble is by this time all the negative reviews are out and a software update that only makes a device function as it was supposed to in the first place isn't really a headline grabber. The phone is already old news

"I buy my phones in the second half of the year" or something like this. Stupid consumerist statement. Who cares! Personally I would like a phone to last, not to have to change it every one or two years, because "developers" push me to do so. Just one more marketing trick. I agree, evolution exists, but most of it is futile and pointless. Real things don't come every day.

HTC situation saddens me as my first smartphone was from them and I was really happy with it.

I think their main problem is they always overestimate their product's worth.
It is very clear they do not have the technology to compete against the likes of Samsung, Apple or Huawei and yet they continue to price their phones way too high.
No wonder nobody wants to buy their products.

If they want to solve their current situation there are only 2 possible options:
                      1) The easy way: Simply cut that ridiculous prices to Xiaomi / One plus levels and they will sell like hot cakes.
                      2) Make some serious investment in tehnology and marketing - no more crappy LCD screens, no more gimmicky squeeze function that wrecks the phone durability.

AnonD-763241, 29 Jul 2018Hey wait!!!! Where is sony I think the master piece i... moreMaybe because it hasn't released yet... Plus, outside of the weirdly placed dual-cameras at the back, it looks like any other Xperia of the past years (all hail the king of Iteration).

I agree on the software side, Google should require all OEM's to have one version or product of Android One every year. This can address the poor fragmentation of Android. Let the customers decide wether they will purchase it or not. Then require 3 years major OS upgrade and 4 years support for security patches. That would be awesome.

                            Where is sony

I think the master piece is sony xz2 premium.
                            Nothing about that

Huawei really wants to beat Samsung's position but if they can do some plans in the US, I bet they will be number one in the future. (I wish XD)

By the way, thank you for sharing your thoughts Ivan! I really love this article.
