Pop-up cameras are also an acceptable solution. But turning the notch into a hole in the screen doesn't make much sense.

Why do you think bezels have to be an all or nothing proposition? 'We found a way to measurably reduce the pollutants our engine puts out, but not eliminate them completely - so we scrapped the project.'
    - It's more efficient to move the status bar above the application rectangle, leaving all of it to work with. If you haven't noticed, notched designs tend to be 18.5:9 or taller. Samsung went 18.5:9 on a rectangular screen, but the status bar infringes the top 1/18th of it, reducing otherwise usable space in most applications.
    - Multiple manufacturers forged ahead with their own notch solutions; Google saw the writing on the wall and standardized it in Android. They would do the same for any feature or design that starts to trend. That is not 'unecessary effort', that is OS development.

      What is the purpose of all this, be able to take a selfie? Cellphone companies should be doing better things for the world and the real technology. This is stupid

        I prefer to have 16:9 or even shorter 3:2 screen, larger sensor on front cam, front stereo speakers, good amount of space for landscape handheld, and a normal rectangle screen...

        ....than a damage prone screen or black space caused by notch or unstandardized screen ratio.

        No bezel isn't the only look-factor, but notch is the one of fruit copycat factor.

          Just wondering, how cringe bezelless bandwagon are, blabbering about "smaller size and larger screen space".

              I dont like notch because its a dead space and obstructing the notification and the status bar and i often reading in portrait mode and watching videos or movies on the go i hate it because A when you watck videos full screen it blocking the movies well if you ask me why dont you zoom it out so it doesn't get blocked i will argue this i buy phones for the screen adding notch is like cheating by adding more screen so that the size seems bigger but it isnt a 5.5 phones without a notch is bigger than a 5.5 with a notch and B its useless and there are far more better ways to do it

                  When we're all raging about phone bezels, noone says a thing about laptops.. I mean they are better than before.. But placement of webcam below the screen is not commendable especially when the camera modules in phones so small.. Why are we not talking about these things?

                  As a personal opinion, i don't mind the notches.... Visualize them as extensions of the screen on either side of the selfie cam on a regular sceen rather than a notch in a bezelless screen

                        Also it uses a whole bezel for what could be a notch.

                        Notches are better position on top because you can still use the horns. On the bottom they are useless.

                        I agree that bottom bezels are useless too though. Iphone's design is the best. It could become a bit better if they were to make the screen boarders smaller because they act as mini bezels.

                        At this point in time. Tiny boarders + notch is the best of all worlds. It's too sad that tech readers are so regressive and a can't see this. Bezels in any quantity are too much.

We've seen from the Mi Mix that there is room in the bottom bezel to put the things that went in the notch, and this is clearly more space-efficient than opening up some screen on top that can only be used for the status bar. Also, top bezel space won't necessarily be wasted - it can be used to hold things like a front facing speaker or notification led that would probably not make it in if there's a notch.

                                  On top of these things, I think notched displays aren't just freeing space with no disadvantages as people often say; they unnecessarily create possible software problems because they make the screen shape non-standard, which has probably required a lot of unseen effort to work around. This is enough of an issue that OS-level changes are being made to handle it, which is far too heavy for a design that's really a sort of temporary step imo.

                                    Opinion is not the best source of innovation. Even marketing focus groups have leaded to disastrous results. So, the poll is good to know that a number of geeks that read this page from around the world are not comfortable with the notch…, but the real indicator is sales figures.
                                    Looking at how the industry has moved towards the notch in the newest models in all price ranges, it seems that market has given the notch a rather warm welcome than a cold rejection…

                                    Transparent OLED could be a very interesting solution, and may be it can introduce some interesting effects and new features…, but would it be as transparent as needed?. The selfie users are getting more and more demanding. Do you want to add a new layer of blurriness in front of the camera?, and not the kind of blurriness that can be swept away and cleaned.

                                    I'll go further, if the screen has become the keyboard, how can the screen become the camera? Is that even possible?... it would be a very large sensor.
