This is an absolutely senseless move by Samsung. Increasing the icon size not only limits the no of icons on a screen bt also spoils the looks (jus like small text looks way better than large text that crams up ur screen).
If a diff look frm apple was required 4 the patent issue, samsung cud've as well reduced the icon size a bit to put more icons on a screen. It wud look way better as I feel the icons on s2 are a bit oversized in the current UI itself!!

well, great move i've always felt that the icons and fonts size are too small for me. and it will be a good excuse for me to ditch my nokia 6230i who provided me with a large fonts size and a built in chinese english dictionary . . .

NICE! How do you like that! It's not a world wide update and it's only optional more so for people who want it! Yet here goes everyone stating that it must be due to loosing a legal battle with Apple. Bwahahaha!

Samsung knows it's a crap update. But they are doing it for legal purposes. I guarantee they hate the idea of a 3x3 icon.

In my opinion, this is sort of what happens when Samsung tries to be original and creative, which is all sorts of #fail.
They are of course, brilliant at taking an existing idea, and then improving it. Not an anti-Samsung statement, but more about reflection of their nature. Similar to LG, which is probably a Korean thing.

Samsung commented on their official blog that the larger icons are optional.

My opinion iphone apple is nothing,1.no main display apps direct to menu
2.no office files viewer
3.dont give the user space to change with iphone I mean the theme
4.no public bluetooth, just between apples product
5.and many people says samsung copying iphone ,come on people that mean even cars and tvs are copying too ,please say somthing acceptable no just talking for, nothing

Why not let the users select? the number of rows, columns, size, text description or not.
while your at it make it possible to have a separate selection for each pane.
Why not let the users edit graphic design of all icons?
Finally it does point out the ridiculous nature of some of Apples patent claims.

AnonD-13017, 10 Oct 2011Why don't you decrease the size of icons to show 5 x 5 icon... moreI couldn't agree more, bringing down the size of the icons to create 5x5 would bring it in line with every custom UI on the market, maybe they're trying to avoid that. But the 3x3 looks ridiculous, it looks like a budget smartphone, not a premium smart phone.
