Weekly poll: Are in-display fingerprint readers the future?

19 August 2018
We've gotten used to fingerprint readers on the back, but mid-range phones with in-display readers are incoming. Is it just a fad?

Side option will be better because you can use it, without seeing it properly.

The Scientist Pigeon, 20 Aug 2018Sorry, My last sentence contained want, not like. Base o... moreSorry about that man, but yes, you have a point there.
In any case, is a mistranslation error. Like and want have the same meaning in Spanish.

Side mounted fingerprint scanner is the best position, I will recommend it.
Front mounted fingerprint scanner is the second runner, I think most people can accept it.
Back mounted fingerprint scanner doesn't better than side and front mounted fingerprint scanner, most people still can get used to it.
In-display fingerprint scanner is slower respond than former mounted fingerprint scanner, it is an excessive technical, the finalized technology should bring the whole display into the fingerprint detectable.
Face ID is a gimmick more than convenient. I think the hardware and software should all rely on the front camera and reduce the extra hardware factor. When people use for wireless payment it is also not so convenient.

well, let me break it in simple terms: Yes and no.
In typical usage fingerprint scanners usually last until you throw your device. But I've seen back-mounted get heavily scratched with keys or get an unlucky hit with something hard which rendered them slower and less accurate and had to be replaced. They're rare cases as well as the rare cases of factory fault. but they exist.

            Hope that was informative ;)

In display fingerprint reader anywhere on the entire phone's touchscreen is the future, not just at the bottom portion of the screen. In the future, from an 'off/locked' display, the moment you begin touching the phone with your index finger anywhere on the phone's touch screen, it would instantly recognize your fingerprint, turn on, and unlock instantly as if it were never locked in the first place. Do the same with an unregistered finger and the display remains off and locked. That's how an intuitive in-display fingerprint reader of the future should behave.

                      Future is face.

A person may not have a finger. But a person must have a head.

Apple will stun the world by removing touchid in the new phones.. and the china clones will follow.

But if you people want to stick to the past.

Then yes.. in finger print is the future of Samsung phones only.. as they are the only ones that will include all tech possible.

                        Active biometrics is the past.

Only fandroids hate technological development so much (passive biometrics), but with time will join us.

Thankfully Huawei (an android developer) is joining the forefront of technology by adding depth ID as well. It's good that the best OS ever produced (android) is having at least one representative that is tech savvy.

Unfortunately with the rest you are forced to live in the past because fandroids have low standards.

Base on different situation you can have something which means you want to have that thing.

Like, means you are keen on using the thing despite being acceptable or not.

I used want, because of such situations you mentioned + shortage of resources like company specific apps and limited availability of handsets which handed over to employees with pre installed apps.

My last sentence was a kind of excuse, in order to separate limits from global aspects.

Nahh, facial recognition is the future. They just need to improve the existing facial recognition technology to match the reliability of fingerprint reader.

I've owned many devices over the past 10 years. I've experienced many faults including vibrator burning out, digitizer failure and speaker failure. All of which happened with normal use and minimal bumps, and got repaired under warranty.

As far as I know, under-display FPS utilizes ultrasound and voodoo magic to detect your fingerprint. The former doesn't last forever, though.
