Anonymous, 03 Sep 2018Yes Nikon make it mirrorless so people will buy Canon inste... moreAn EVF shows you EXACTLY what your camera is going to capture. No more guessing or chimping. They don't have any distortions or "ever changing brightness". And you can select just how much information you want displayed.

Your comment has me convinced you have never in your life used an EVF. You sound like the equivalent of an old man angrily yelling at clouds.

FinnishInquisition, 31 Aug 2018If they were focusing on the D3500 being a small and light ... moreYes Nikon make it mirrorless so people will buy Canon instead? Great idea.
Oh how much i hate the fake image in electronic viewfinders, the distortions and ever changing brightness and excessive info. I rather get a rangefinder if no more DSLR. Fuji X100 maybe.

Good price. Nothing beats an optical viewfinder, mirrorless with electronic viewfinders feels like toys more than image capturing devices, i wouldnt even be surprised if Sony forget to put a shutter button on a camera, its like it has become less important, they want you to look inside and be amazed when it follows your eye.
Plus, optical viewfinders are saving the battery, easily doubles or triples the battery life. Still got an old D3100, no issues, in RAW mode its far more true to nature than Sony A7/A7R II. JPEGs have wrong white balance so need to save both jpeg and raw.

Good! It's nice to have an article/news like this. Last month (August), my interest in smartphones has lost and shifted toward cameras. Last week, I was about to buy a Nikon D3400 as it is considered to be the best entry-level dslr camera. But since I am still new to photography and don't know how to operate a dslr camera, I just purchased 2 compact cameras (Sony DSC-W830 and Canon IXUS 185) to develop my new interest. Once comfortable enough, I will buy this dslr camera or the old Nikon D3400.

Does this have HDR mode? My D3300 doesn't and that is its only major flaw. A minor flaw is lack of microUSB charger.

              sounds good
my d3200 still alive until now
but d3500 battery life itself is worth to get.
nikon mirrorless isnt mature yet and im ok with dslr, it doesnt matter to me. battery life is important. shooting landscape so dslr or mirrorless, fast auto focus or not, doesnt matter much.

paco2x, 31 Aug 20181550 shots... very impressive, that's 3x of most mirrorless... moreThat's sadly because the sensor and display/EVF is permanently on in a mirrorless camera, both of which eat battery like a madman.

I'm hoping the rumours are true, and that Sony is about to release a new APS-C model with the Z-series battery, which should at the very least double the cameras stamina. It'd still not be any 1500 shots, but it'd definitely be a start.

user, 31 Aug 2018I'll have to disagree to some points. The D3500 most likely... moreAnd I'm happy that you disagree with me! The discussion would be exceedingly dull otherwise.

Concerning a Nikon APS-C mirrorless camera, I think you're entirely right that Nikon hadn't finished their APS-C mirrorless development yet. Most likely all of their mirrorless development resources went to the Z6 and Z7.

But they don't necessarily need to create a full APS-C lens lineup before releasing such a camera. They could just as well have customers use an adapter for the existing F-mount lenses, and then let people buy the full frame Z-mount lenses if their want native lenses. It's pretty much what Sony has been doing (annoyingly enough) with their mirrorless APS-C cameras. That would give Nikon and third parties time to develop APS-C lenses, while also capitalising on the market and have people invest in the Z-mount early on.

Regarding Nikon's entrance into the full frame mirrorless market, the Nikon cameras can unfortunately not compete with the Sony options. Nikon is still a good year or two behind. They should have learned from Sony's early mistakes, but they didn't. As such, I see the professionals using Nikon either sticking with their DSLR's until Nikon releases a second generation of their Z-mount cameras, or move over to Sony to avoid the wait.

Still rocking my 2 yrs old D5200 with wifi. Quite happy with that.

FinnishInquisition, 31 Aug 2018If they were focusing on the D3500 being a small and light ... moreI'll have to disagree to some points. The D3500 most likely isn't mirrorless because APS-C mirrorless is not ready yet - especially that you need a new lens lineup for APS-C mirrorless. As for Sony's expected dominance in the professional market, that may not happen, because Nikon has already launched full-frame mirrorless and full-frame is where majority of the professionals are at, so Nikon isn't far behind.

paco2x, 31 Aug 20181550 shots... very impressive, that's 3x of most mirrorless... morecarry additional NP-FW50 battery, small and convenient

Well most users will be satisfied with 40mp day/ 10mp night&tele&hdr because of price thats close to that right now and super light and thin body of p20pro. Not to say it not just camera sensor in it, its whole phone.
I also use small a5000, but even at that smallish size its hard to have it all the time with you the way you got a phone and still it lacks few features you get in a phone - like hi res screen, waterproofing and other fun stuff that will help when taking shot.
Best camera is the one you have when you need to take a shot. And though I mostly got also full sized camera, I don't wear it like necklace most of time, so as for action shots phone is the best.

[deleted post]How is he a troll.. he stated a true fact.. that camera will make any phone look like trash.. its sad how people think phones can outbeat this camera i mean look at the size of the camera compared to the hardware in a phone

1550 shots... very impressive, that's 3x of most mirrorless cameras battery capacity, i know because i have the Sony A6500 a lovely and great camera but the battery life is pitiful as almost like any mirrorless camera and i need at least 2 even 3 batteries to make a regular photo session, my other camera a low end Nikon D3300 can make it with a single battery pack.

If they were focusing on the D3500 being a small and light upgrade over the D3400, they should really have made it mirrorless. But then again, I'm not sure its actually possible to do "small and light" with the massive Z-mount. It would also not have worked too well in terms of shots per charge, given the small battery Nikon decided to go with for their mirrorless lineup.

I wonder for how long Nikon and Canon will prioritise DSLR's. They really need to invest a lot in moving over to mirrorless, as they're already far behind Sony, Fujifilm and Panasonic. If Sony ups the ante on build quality and professional support, they'll definitely become the new main player on the professional camera market.
