Difference between an on-screen display and the on-screen fingerprint scanner is that the OSD displays time and notification. While the OSFS uses both the display for the fingerprint scanner and the fingerprint scanner sensor behind the screen. This is why most manufacturers, Even apple. Don't implement such technology on their flagship devices as it is still on infant stage where the technology behind it is still not perfect.

I have NEVER considered a 5" phone to be a mini one...and many others share the same view based on numerous posting over the years. Even the Galaxy S3 with it's 4.8" screen still feels somewhat big...despite the S3 not having huge bezels like Sony phones.

I am perfectly fine with fingerprint scanner being on back of the phone, or even having a notch for Face ID... or even not having any of it and use a password like in the old days.
Fingerprint scanner under the screen is just another thing that potentially could go wrong, indeed it will push companies to further advancements in technology and whoever looks forwards to fingerprint scanner back on the front, I’m happy for them.
Personally I don’t even have anything against bezels (but I do if phone has bezels AND notch) and I am kinda nostalgic to old phones...

DarthBatman, 11 Sep 2018Why is this a thing? I have wondered this since they starte... moreWhat's wrong with the fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone? Simple. You need to raise your phone just to use the fingerprint scanner. If the smartphone has wireless charger. It would interrupt the charging process because of the fingerprint unlocking on the back. Unlocking the phone on the front or on the side of the smartphone is better than on the back. Also, when accidentally dropped. And the impact is in the back of the smartphone. The fingerprint scanner won't be damage.
Problem with on-screen fingerprint scanner is the requirements of having a clean dry finger and a clean dry display in order for the fingerprint scanner to work.

Why is this a thing? I have wondered this since they started talking about it. What is wrong with the finger print scanner on the back of the phone? So you can open it with a single hand, makes sense right? Why are they making a big deal out of changing something that was never broken and seems kind of foolish really? I have never heard a person say "jeez I wisxh they would put the fingerprint scanner on the screen.....

Anonymous, 10 Sep 2018Ultrasonic... more marketing bsUltrasonic means it sends waves to read your fingerprint, and then it unlocks. It takes 0.2s to do just that (and Coincidentally it takes the same for a "traditional FPS" to do that too.
