I would like to have a cat as big as the one on the advertisement.

But actually it is a negative thing as they grow - until we get flexible devices, as they - of course - get more prone to bending the larger the area and the thinner.... Just look how a wallet in the pocket forms over time, and a phablet experiences similar forces...

And the foldable ones, that is a technology very much in its infancy. I doubt that we will see a really good solution using that within the next five years. We will see the very first steps commercially available next year, with a single bend with a large curvature radius.

But like you rightly pointed out with the example of the old Moto Razr compactness and lightness used to be an asset you have to pay a premium for. Even with laptops, tablets, televisions, you pay more for smaller, thinner, lighter devices and less for heavy, thick ones. Wonder how the opposite is true of phones which are the devices we carry and hold the maximum on an average day, and they are getting bigger and heavier. I wonder what engineering and weight complications foldable devices would bring. I'd like to be excited and hopeful, but...

dvdivx, 30 Sep 2018It's odd that Apple understands the market in the first wor... moreLTE coverage depends on your network provider...
WiFi coverage depends on the router, but still overall experience is based on the internet service provider...
You can have a 'good' phone but if the basics are not there, it's gonna thrash the overall experience...

Chinese brands have had dual sim, and even triple sim 'smart' phones since 2006... They have also improved dramatically in terms of radiation exposure, with many now even manage to go lower than lowered SAR rating benchmark (from 2.0 to 1.8) with both sim cards and/or antenna in use (standby)... Some single sim phones to this day still have high SAR score, for God knows why...

Waterproofing was something the Japanese had since 2010... Dual screen phones also existed in 2010 thanks to Fujitsu in Japan long before ZTE picked up the design... Bezelless design was introduced by Sharp in 2014 and 2 years later XiaoMi restarted the trend...

Stereo speakers in smartphone already existed since Apple was getting Sony's help to design their iPhone 4... Dual camera, well it wasn't exactly iPhone 7 Plus that had it first...

I need not mention about wireless charging and the lists that goes on...

It's odd that Apple understands the market in the first world but Xaiomi and Hauwei have no clue. Only Chinese maker that even understands there is a cellphone market outside of China and India is Oneplus. The others will never have a large screen phone with good LTE coverage.

RS, 30 Sep 2018Haha. I doubt the Ray, Neo, Arc or anything with keyboards ... moreMy point was that it would be nice to see logically identical 2018 flagship devices of different sizes. And the last time this was done (to my knowledge) were the three (well four) from way back in 2011.

Today when new devices are released in multiple sizes, the physical lesser ones are also lesser (or even mediocre) speced. This goes for ALL brands, not only aPple and Samsung.

In the beginning of the mobile phone era, then the smaller and lighter they were, the more expensive they were - and that sold just fine!
                e.g. https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_razr_v3-853.php weighing 95g
So there are no reason that the equally speced devices of different sizes should not carry the same price tag. (Perhaps with a marginal difference reflecting the bill of materials)

So we could all chose the size-variant that best fits our hands, eyes and usage patterns.

Many go for 'the best', and unfortunately this today also means 'the most humongous'. And as manufacturers sees that this sells well - well then the next will be the same or even more monstrous...

The only way to really break this 'circle' is if a manufacturer take the chance and see how the market reacts to different sizes of similar devices.

I doubt it will happen though! But hopefully folded devices will be our rescue from the megalomania, with a phone sized device when folded, and then unfolded to phablet/tablet size. I hope for a three part device. That could give roughly 16:9 both folded and unfolded. (but that is years ahead unfortunately)

Actually a new QWERTY slider is supposed to be announced this October, And I eagerly await to see it....

EskeRahn, 30 Sep 2018Yeah it is odd. I do not understand why no manufacturers (... moreHaha. I doubt the Ray, Neo, Arc or anything with keyboards are going to ever return. Though there is talk of a 3.3-inch Palm expected. I wouldn't want to go that small. But between 4.3 to 4.7 inches on a 16:9 or maybe a 5-inch 2:1 seems like a comfortable compromise between comfort of viewing, typing, and carrying. I am shocked people are just going for large unwieldy devices that cause severe carpel tunnel.

I remember when 'Sir' Jonathan Paul Ive was asked why are iPhones given such small batteries, he said because it makes devices lighter making people use them more. This was in 2015.
                  https://www.engadget.com/2015/03/06/jony-ive-iphone-battery/
Wonder what he'd have to say when the latest iPhones weigh as much as rugged phones. are about as rugged as a strand of feather, and just about make it a day when the battery is new.

Smartphones have grown as large as miniature TVs in the blink of eye. And before we realise it, they are heading towards weighing as much. No point blaming OEMs if we as customers keep buying into the inconveniences. The iPhone XS Max and the rugged Galaxy S8 Active both weigh 208 grams. Think about it.

I do not understand why no manufacturers (except Sony) think there is a market here.

Is there REALLY so few that walk their dog, or carry a bag of groceries, that only a few would want one-handed devices? Or are the eyes of almost all people so poor that they must have a huge display to read information?

I'm NOT saying that we should all go back to phone sized devices, but it would be nice if more manufacturers gave us the OPTION.

I like the idea of diversity, and as you say some manufacturers have a huge number of almost equal slabs, so why not try to reach a broader audience? That the majority like the huge Phablets does not mean that we are ALL in that category. It is almost like Eastern Europe 40 years ago. Our 'choice' is a bit like if we were allowed to choose from hundreds of colours for the steering wheel for the same Trabant...

I would love to see something similar to what Sony Ericsson did in 2011.
                      https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3972&idPhone2=3734&idPhone3=3619
Put three flagship speced models on the market, that are logically/functionally identical, except the scale. Say 57, 67 and 77mm wide and with FHD today.

...They even had a variant of the middle sized "Neo" called the "Pro" with a QWERTY slider. https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3779&idPhone2=3734
I would personally LOVE to see a return of that - but the market here is small in 2018...

EskeRahn, 29 Sep 2018Diversity is the keyword here... We and our usage patter... moreI feel for you. The XZ2 Compact is the only up to date option. But I don't want to pay a premium for a one-handed phone. For me the original Moto X with it's curved back, 4.7 inch, 16:9, 720p with a hidden navigation bar offers an incredibly compact, ergonomically and visually comfortable immersive experience. I wonder if Android's ugly navigation bar is to blame for people leaning over to big phones. With the bar hidden I get an easy two to three lines of text in the screen and that automatically makes it bigger. Samsung and Xiaomi especially flood the market with nearly identical devices every week. Why can't they have one 65x130mm device in this flood. By the way, phones are getting heavier too. If anybody is noticing, they all weigh above 165 175gms now. With no marked improvement in battery life. A Redmi 4, which is compact by today's standards with a 4100mah battery weighed about 150gms. The Redmi 6 Pro with a 4000mah battery weighs 180. Even the XZ2 Compact weighs 170 for all its petiteness. The XS Max weighs the same as a Galaxy SO Active which is a rugged phone. That had Heavy as a listed con. Nobody calls the Max heavy. Where is the weight from? No wonder people have aching wrists and webbing issues in their palms handling these massive monsters. But I don't see logic and compact phones returning.

They should also advertise how courageous they are to price it at EUR 1200, and how EUR 800 of those go directly into the pocket of the Apple executives.
