Face recognition is not really that of a security. It is more of a bling like what they did with Lenovo's face recognition login. It can easily be faked by a picture EVERYTIME.

I thought it was obvious that this is possible. The only thing is (as with the face unlock on laptops for the last 5 years) if you turn up security it only unlocks from an exact angle of your face... so if someone took a picture of you from the exact ange the phone did when you were holding it then yes.. it will unlock.. if its slightly from an angle it wont unlock...

I cant believe how many Trolls are here. The unlock was not a security feature, its an alternative to unlocking. i find the htc circle lock annoying, the screen off and the slide unlock, boring.

Was pretty obvious that you could overcome the Face Unlock this way, no?

I don't understand what the big deal is about this feature. THis is not the first time that this feature is being used on a product. A lot of laptops / netbooks had this before. Look, if it's not so secured, then use a different lock instead. Or just don't implement this at all. It's not like the world will stop functioning the moment we don't get to have this.

this is T3 website, who actually give fair reviews and biased iphone loving ones like gsm.

"The one feature everyone will want to try however is Face Unlock. By using the front-facing camera the Galaxy Nexus can recognise the owner and then unlock the phone.

It's an incredibly neat feature, however as pointed out to us by Google, is also a very low security feature, so can be still be bypassed, that said, it's an impressive showcase of the technology that's inside the Nexus."

toysoldier07, 14 Nov 2011it woulnt work on dark places,. boo this!siri wouldnt work in noisy places.

Anyway, google said that this wasnt a secure way of locking your phone (even gsm reported that) funny thing is that if this was apple related gsm wouldnt report as they only seem to report good things on the iphone like their fan boy reviews

Personally all this new technology is just going to constantly increase the end cost of mobile phones, i mean they can cost upto £500 unlocked!!! Now that Siri has been invented like one comment said, its made the user lazy. I cant wait for the new software to come out, as if my experia arc isn't already amazing

and? what if the phone's screen can be unlocked with a photo?
Is not like an authentication problem; is just an alternative unlock, so I don't see the point of this "news".

... sometimes I really have the feeling that gsmarena is on the apple's payroll ...

Anonymous, 14 Nov 2011Nothing is better than the Atrix biometric fingerprint read... moreThese kind of features are worse than useless because they give the user a false sense of security. There is no way regular face-detection algorithms can separate a face from picture since they work on flat 2D image. only workable solutions are two separate cameras to get 3D or taking video while moving the camera. Those need either more hardware or really fancy algorithms. Can't really see either happening.

I doubt the fingerprint sensor on Atrix is much better either. I remember a Myth busters episode where they fooled a bunch of expensive sensors with basically a fingerprint printed on a paper.

Well at least we are not putting pics of our fingerprints on Facebook.
