luc,
Sure the iPhone is a great device with many improvements(faster/more reactive/prettier U.I,multitouch screen, overall build quality,etc...) other current generation multimedia phone(i don't think it can even be considered as a smartphone).
However,it also have too many limitations/restrictions compared to competitors,it is overhyped,it is overpriced and last but not the least the conditions to have it are almost unacceptable for any conscious customer.
I acknowledge that it will be quite successful, there are enough Apple fanboys and fashion victims for that, but this success could lead to disaster for costumers if it favors the kind of deal Apple is having with operators regarding the iPhone.

"It's a nice product, but the features and the price make it an unworthy purchase."
I fully agree.
And we can also add that numerous artificial restrictions/limitations willingly implemented by Apple are quite painful tool.

What's the point of the iPhone?
All this hype is by people who do not value functionality.
The features are laughable, my cheap Nokia 6234 is around the same, without the iPod, Wi-Fi, and "OS" functionality (mine isn't a smartphone so it has no OS). And this is around 3-4 times as much as my Nokia.
Sure, it looks nice, but models such as the Nokia 8800 Sirocco look good, and they, like the iPhone have simply no functionality.
Touch screen is nothing new, PDA phones, etc have been on the market for ages, Apple do earn merits for the multi-touch and things like that though.
It's a nice product, but the features and the price make it an unworthy purchase.

LOL... i WAS anti Iphone... sed to myself... locked BS - too big*, too expensive, marginal camera...etc. I've had a LG shine, numerous V3 motorola series-including K1, SAMSUNG U600, U300 and had 3 nokias, no sony's tho [nice phones tho]
But i got one... and now that I've used this phone, I can say - it's awesome! Truly, Truly REVOLUTIONARY user interface - serious... nothing like it, and cannot compare any "phones" to it.
The computer is faster than any phone i've tried [except the old old phones from the long past* which doesn't even have a camera. FAST!
As for the camera, yes, it is only 2mp... but consider this: PICTURE CAPTURE WITHIN 1 SECOND. I have the U600samsung 3.2mp camera - great camera - but takes over 5 seconds sometimes to store the large picture to the phone... and it takes the pic slow - so takes up to 10 seconds to store a bad picture before you can take another -LOL... but not biggy - cuz the thing is really a phone.
Size - well... size matters - cuz it boasts the best in industry 16m - biggest in industry screen - so there is a reason why it is large. .. .. size? - it is thinner than my U600... as thin as the u300.
dunno what is the deal with battery complaints - cuz advertised 8hrs talk time... is good - I never tried the 8hrs - but indeed, it does last long enuff. .. perhaps when using bluetooth, wifi etc will drain battery faster.. but talktime is better than most.
furthermore, i'd admit it... i have a unlocked version - works fine... ... i dont care that i cant apply my own ringtones-LOL... ... cuz it is still better than the BS that CDMA carriers put their customers thru. -SERIOUSLY, CDMA CARRIERS ARE SOOO MUCH WORSE... at least for this phone - there are unlocks available... CDMA, BUY THEIR PHONES - OR NOTHING!!!
common PPl... try the phone for 1 week... and if you really use it, U'd love it. THIS IS COMING FROM AN ANTI APPLE - ANTI IPOD - PRO pc*

Reasons why not to buy iPhone:
1) Poor 5 hour battery life and non-removable, costs $100 to send in to Apple tp replace.
2) No 3G, No Mp3 Ringtones or good camera (only 2 megapixel & no flash)
3) Poor call quality and volume on the iPhone.
Guys do not buy I owned one and sold it and bought the Sony Ericsson K550...

I work in a mobile retail store and actually LAUGH at people stupid enough to buy into the hype. Just like the Nokia 8800, where people trying to compensate for other 'lacking' areas in their life bought the phone to make up the difference, the IPhone is doing as much.

I wouldn't say that a phone which doesn't let me send mass sms or doesn't let me search by name in the agenda, or which doesn't have a notification for new SMS in it status bar, and many other ergonomic issues is targeted towards people who like USING their phone. The iphone's ergonomics are below sea level.

"You are not the iPhone's marketing target group."
And what are the target groups ?
People who like to be ripped off and/or to buy highly restricted tools ?
Fashion victims ?
Apple fanboys ?
"For those who like USING their mobile device, instead of tinkering with it: This is a great device."
Well, too bad it is so overpriced(1000 euros for it unlocked !!!),have useless limitations(unless one find it great to buy twice for a MP3 file in order to be able to use it as ringtone,etc... !!!),it can be made unusable by mere software upgrade, and that Apple is starting with it the worse form of deal, customer wise,a constructor can have with operators.
The most funny is that Apple could have released a much more powerful(and much more successful) multimedia Phone if they were not so obsessed by control and by greed.

Well, this is not the phone for the little boys who like to unscrew everything, brag about some impressive numbers (like an 5MP-camera... what for?!?) , personalize it with naked-chicks-wallpapers and so on. You are not the iPhone's marketing target group.
For those who like USING their mobile device, instead of tinkering with it: This is a great device.

It's not about the numbers: it's about the way you use what's available. This really is a revolution in making a managable phone, that can also be used as a multi-media-device. No matter how much principle hate you have against iPods, Apple and what not. It is a revolutionary and truly ingenious device. As a proof for it: Look at all the ripp-offs.

The iphone is really an overrated ipod with a GSM module. It's ergonomics are below sea-level and the whole activation thing, together with the non-removable battery, no software expansion possibilities, and many more design flaws make for one pretty poor and restrictive user experience. I'd say Apple have a lot more to learn before they can expand their market beyond their own brand fans and fashion addicts.

What disturbs me the most about the iPhone is not that it is quite underpowered smartphone wise and completely closed, but it is the fact it is creating a dangerous precedent regarding deals between constructors and operators.
I find difficult to swallow and almost insane that Orange will give 30 % of the money they will earn on the iPhone to Apple.
Apple keep reminding to me why i didn't,don't and won't ever buy an Apple product.
