Marco M, 05 Nov 2018Unfortunately Google kept all patents related to Moto's pro... moreEven so, the next Moto flagship is supposed to be significantly different than the current ones. It is supposed to drop the gimmickry modular concept and use a new design (which could be anything, possibly even a slider like the Z5 Pro because Moto is owned by Lenovo).
I still have faith in Moto...

Note7 owner, 05 Nov 2018Chinese manufacturers new gimmick..Gimmick is something different, that provides no real benefint. Actually in some cases they instead bring disadvantages.
Examples:
Curved screens are gimmicks. Providing worse grip, worse fullscreen video enjoyment and more prone to cracking if dropped.
Big notches are due to facial recognition, which is a gimmick.
Notches themselves are pointless. They aim to increase StB ratio, but forgetting that the whole point of that is to obtain a bezel less experiance. The notch completely ruins the bezel less experience.
Sliders and pop-ups however are not gimmicks. They provide fullscreen displays and also provide those self loving people of this world with the possibility to easily photograph themselves all through the day with ease.
Until now we have seen motorized pop-ups in two varieties, one better than the other (Vivo's), and these manual sliders. I'm curious if we get to see a pop-up selfie cam similar to the pop-up viewfinder in Sony RX100 cameras. No slider needed, and no motorization either.

Engineer, 05 Nov 2018Nice enough innovation, but the big one so far mostly come ... moreUnfortunately Google kept all patents related to Moto's project Ara when they sold Moto to Lenovo.
And later (2016) they scrapped the whole project.

Out of all the devices in that list, I find the Honor Magic 2, Lenovo Z5 Pro & Nubia X the most appealing & deserving of recognition. Among those three, the Nubia one is the most practical for obvious reasons, although it would probably be the least successful one in terms of commercial success for unfortunate reasons.

Ark1985, 05 Nov 2018I would still pick mi mix3 over honor magic 2 or z5pro. Honor Magic 2 has better specs.

It's not even that, it's the fact that most (or all?) sliders lack water protection, which makes them toys for basement dwellers. It's not 2013, a phone without IP67 or IP68 is not something worth spending money on it.
Seriously, even the most hideous notch is ten times better.

Sliders have been around for a long time. And they still work flawlessly on even 5 year old nokia phones. So no, the argument of sliding mechanisms being prone to breaking is a non-issue. The issue is how poorly the irresponsible haters take care of their phones.
