Vive Focus standalone VR headset launches in the West at $600

09 November 2018
It's $100 more than the original Vive headset, but you don't need a PC or any wires.

Well VR is still more believable that looking at monitor.

I have many friends that got seriously scared, they truly believed the experience. Of course is not a REALITY replica (yet) but clearly it is a more believable illusion, that other entertainment alternatives; and is getting better and better.

The sooner this company goes down, the better it will be for VR.

The greed this company openly flouts is unreal. The sticker shock alone will keep people a mile away from anything V that's followed by R. Shame on HTC for it's endless corporate greed.

I love VR but with the power of PC, not mere mobile chips.

AnonD-771260, 09 Nov 2018It is interesting gadget but companies will kill it with hi... moreIt will rather kill itself.

VR seriously lack realism. You never believe you are there. The graphics, the sharpness, the sounds are more fake than if even you were playing a PC game. If immersion is the point of VR then their current iteration then they fail miserably, which is why people use it for one hour and then never touch it again.

This produce things that people don't use VR because it is Expensive. So by eliminating the PC they think people would buy it. But this product is wrong, long term it will sell even less because it is even less immersive and word of mouth would tell you that this gets boring in half an hour (instead of 1h like the original).

VR has to compete with consoles. And consoles *kill* it. First you have to fix the immersion issue and then you try to make it wireless.

So you start with sharpness. It is like playing an SNES game currently. Pixelated mess. 5k should be a minimum resolution for the screen.

The latency is still an issue. W wireless you only make it worse, so maybe you use a more practical wired (to the PC or future consoles) version. I.e. a single wire which can somehow be suspended and not get in the way. Make latency to go to less than 1ms.

People can detect as much as 1000 fps. So up the refresh rate to 120hz (for the time being), but actually target 240 Hz. Sound should be truly immersive so do not use headsets. Instead make the lighthouses to also emit sound.

All those ofc would make the setup more expensive and not less and would require us to have even more space and even more hardware to support it. So maybe you make VR something that only dedicated places can run, like the old coin-ups era where you could game high end games only in dedicated places.

By trying to make the price of VR friendly to the consumer you kill it. We are at least a decade away from such horsepower and such prices. A proper setup (+the PC) should cost around $5000 currently. To be consumer friendly it has to cost around $300. That's almost 16x down . 4 halvings in price, so at least 8-10 years away.

VR is the future it is just not here yet and that is partly true because those companies don't get it.

But, most of the people out there are not interested of using the VR headset.

It is interesting gadget but companies will kill it with high price. Unless most of VR stuff will be meant mostly for business users, but then again market will be so small.
