H-1, 17 Nov 2018Not only OEM behaviour. If you've ever modded a device you... moreException prooves that it is possible.
If it is possible, that prooves that Mediatek isn't the problem.

        Rootable at best?
I'm ok to say customisation is harder on Mediatek, but rootable at best? That's lying!
Even with tiny brands, like Haipai, Vernee, Elephone...etc, it is possible to root and to install custom recovery.
It's even easier to root that kind of devices than a Nexus 7 2012 (no need to unlock bootloader)
If I talk about these brands and devices, it's because I do it, including Nexus 7! I even still have the Haipai (from 2012 too), it runs a custom MiUI (custom that used stock Kernel).
Obviously, you never try to root any Mediatek!

On some devices, you can even find custom roms built from sources.
You can find some here :
        https://github.com/MediatekAndroidDevelopers
Most 64bits soc from Mediatek are there...
You will find other customisation on russian sites...
You will find Helio X27 that runs Debian or Sailfish OS...
Android One with Mediatek too...(first Android One used mt6582).

Anonymous, 17 Nov 2018OEM behavior! Nokia updates... Nokia 3 uses mt6737. This... moreNot only OEM behaviour.
If you've ever modded a device you'd know that most of custom ROMs are made for Snapdragon and Exynos CPUs. Please look for the reason before throwing accusations.
Mediatek are rootable at best, most of the time that is.

Exceptions are there, of course, be it SDs with no updates or Mediateks with updates.

xXENDER FREAKXx, 17 Nov 2018If it doesn't provide as much software updates as a Qualcom... moreMediatek provides even on entry-level, exemple :
            Mt6737 - released with Android 6.0
Never updated on many devices - like, for exemple, Uhans A101S
Nokia 3 with mt6737 - released with Android 7.0 - today running Android 8.0 - planned to be update to Android 9.0.
            Or
            Mt6750 - released with Android 6.0
On Nokia 3.1, it will cet Android 9.0
            Or
            Helio P10 - released with Android 5.0
Slightly modified P18 will get Android 9.0

Depending on brands, with the same soc, one will run 9.0 when other runs Android 6.0.
            Conclusion : it's not Mediatek's fault!

On the other side, Qualcomm were condamned in China, South Korea, Taiwan, European Unions, USA for abusing of dominance and unfair commercial behavior (refusing to sell Standard Essentiel Patents...see the US Federal courthouse's decision last weekend!)
I prefer skipping a company that were condamned over the word.
I would see more companies like Nokia using Mediatek.

Your opinion of skipping is made on tiny OEM behavior compared to major OEM.
Mine is made on courthouses decision.

AnonD-558092, 16 Nov 2018I don't think anyone can get excited about a MediaTek phone. If it doesn't provide as much software updates as a Qualcomm chipset would provide, skip it

I'm happy to see something else...
                People should stop applausing monopoly

Its software or UI is pathetic.
Even if it have Snapdragon 450 on a low resolution display, battery drain and performance are awful

Anonymous, 16 Nov 2018Perhaps you don't know what inferior is or you are not very... moreMediatek phones are notorious for their short update life, and most of which don't get an OS upgrade.
So it doesn't matter if mediatek builds the ultimate CPU which performs better than anything to come in the next two years. In six months after its release, the phone holding it will be an outdated shadow of a flagship.
