Weekly poll results: Oppo RX17 Pro rates well, Neo fails to impress

Oppo may have priced these two a bit too high to get large crowds at launch day.

For me the obvious choice was between Oppo and OnePlus 6T. The Neo version didn't seem very exciting, although I was not thrilled about spending 600 euros on a phone. FYI long story ahead.

Anyway, I got both Oppo rx17 pro and OnePlus 6T to compare them. Performance-wise OP6T is much better (if you look at both AnTutu scores and even basic usage). However, in my opinion Oppo has a much better camera. I did multiple comparison tests and tried every single option of the camera software.
That being said, the software for the 3D camera isn't present (not sure about Oppo R17 pro for China). It was a big disappointment to find out that upon purchase, but I've been reading that software will come with an update (?). No clue as to when will that happen, and how and why the phone was released like this.

At first I was a bit repulsed from the Color OS 5.2 because I have some inner hatred for anything remotely reminding me of iPhones (yes I'm sure they perform great I just really really don't like them). Some gestures like sliders (for brightness) or selecting multiple objects/pictures perform like in an iOS and not Android. I expected that Android Pi on the OP6T will be much more pleasant! - only to some extent. It has much more customization options for gestures and menus and how apps behave, probably even better optimization (I'm not so tech savvy though), but there was nothing really exciting about it. Both phones have very quick facial recognition and the built-in fingerprint scanners work very good. The style and the animations on Oppo are more, and look more fancy.

On Oppo, it's not possible to uninstall or even disable Google Chrome and other apps - very annoying to me. Your options are to hide them in some folder on the screen and never touch them, or use a launcher (like I did). You can disable those on OnePlus but it there you cannot do other simple stuff - you literally cannot do anything about the red and white clock on the lock screen (tried for good 10 min and read some forums; if I'm wrong feel free to include how that works).

You might think that I'm nit-picking, which might be true, but after all choosing a phone is not only looking at specifications and the price. You'll either have a click and be excited or be just "meh, nice but whatever".

I decided to take the risk. Despite having 6 vs 8gb RAM, mid-range CPU and GPU (vs. high-end components in OP6T), and a bunch of small other things, I chose the Oppo. The two things I'm hoping for are adequate after-sales support for updates and stuff, and that the 3d camera software will be implemented soon. I also had the Oppo O-free wirless earphones as a gift for the purchase, so that also helped making my choice.

Installed Nova Launcher straight away, so I can get that "Android-like" feeling of select&hold objects to edit or long-press on the home screen, etc. And so far I really enjoy it. The design is amazing, and in my opinion even the Huawei P20 pro doesn't look that cool. Price could be a bit less, yes, but just because they're entering the European market (or at least some countries) it doesn't mean they have to sell cheap. Phones with similar characteristics that have been released a year ago still hold the same price. Years back none of my friends has heard of Huawei, yet now it's one of the hottest things on the Dutch smartphone market. Offering Rx 17 pro and Neo (plus the older models) is a good choice in my opinion and it fits different budgets. What I like the most is finally seeing some nice competition and diversity, and not having to stare at the "same phone" with different brand and price.

Cheers

matix73, 18 Nov 2018I'll be the one who says "wow, a 3D ToF camera!"Me too "wow, a 3D ToF camera!"

I could see a sample of the recording in 4K: A beautiful image; but the OIS is quite weak, and no info on a possible EIS ... 600 €: no 4k 60fps, no EIS, that miss .... compared to One +6 , the presence of the 3D scanner (assuming it is relatively performing ..) is a real innovation! And not only for scanning and dancing a panda in 3D (like at Huawei, remember me the price of Mate 20 pro?) Or his girlfriend naked! But Oppo's marketing forget to speak corectly about it, and it's sold without the function ready... in addition the price is too expensive in many market where the brand is unknown. Scanning a mechanic part and importing it into my CAD program would then make me spend a hundred more than the Neo, but otherwise ... go for a RealMe pro 2 it's cheaper ...

Piphacker, 18 Nov 2018Its price is just insane All oppo/vivo/bbk phones (sans OnePlus) are stupidly overpriced, because they offer higher margins to the retail channel, which in turn likes them for those margins.

The rx17 Pro pricing put peoples off. Hopefully they will revise when they launch the phone. Remember, this is only a top mid ranger, not a flagship.

Hahaha mia2 is a android one phone atleast it will get updates, buying a 600 phones for no update cycles is useless, well oppo never has updated it's phones, xaiomi maybe slow but it's still better on those terms and yes it matters ,the updates matter big time
