Microsoft shortly passed Apple as the most valuable American company

27 November 2018
Once a $1 trillion company, Apple struggles with sales of its latest smartphones while Microsoft’s subscription based software and cloud service business add value to the company.

Whackcar, 27 Nov 2018Microsoft is a better company than Apple by any means, so I... moreThis is amusing to read, having used MS OSes and software since the 80s.
    - Microsoft has been caught implementing sabotage code for other companies' applications on their OS (see WordPerfect), and their applications on other companies' OS (see Office on OS2, DR-DOS).
    - They have been found guilty of illegally (and to the detriment of their OS and its security) tying their browser into their dominant OS to boost market share, and lied about it being 'impossible' to separate.
    - Once browser dominance was achieved by illegal 'co-mingling', MS wreaked havoc on open internet standards for a decade or more.
    - They've thrown products and services at the wall and abandoned them almost on a whim (past drm-locked music services with libraries suddenly wiped out, Zune, Windows RT, stop-gap Windows mobile 6.5 phone, and a number of "will be upgraded" never-actually-updated stop-gap Windows Phone 7 handsets are some of the better known orphans).
    - They generally take at least 3 releases to get a product right.
    - They are actively working to turn desktop Windows into a data vacuum like Google has with Chrome & Android.

I hope somewhere in future Microsoft release a clean version of Windows 10 without bloatware and spying software. Windows 10 Lite or something. The Current Windows 10 is just slow compared to Windows 7 or 8.1.

harianilchandran, 27 Nov 2018Windows 10 has slowed down my tablet that came with 8.1. An... moreTotally agree

Windows 8 phone were for single month sold the most phones of the then 4 operating systems.

Microsoft pre announced the "closure" of Windows phone 8 operating systems I.e ni more updates after some future date

Despite testing Windows phone 10 crashed many WP 8 phones and even failed on the Lumia 650 and 950 on which it was designed to run out the box

Two years of updates still couldn't fix the W10.
Microsoft stopped selling phones even the flagship Lumia 950 as to sell phones would only add to the population of phones using this malware W10

Windows 8 is viable and running smoothly albeit a ceased version

Microsoft could have even released the Lumia 950 & 650 running Windows 8 and incrementally increased the features

To release W10 when it demonstrated so many problem is why Microsoft is no longer making phone,
All Windows phones were set to receive the first W10 update, but so severe were the issues encountered , approximately 75% of these models were pulled... Yet Microsoft still put this OS out there

If say W12 was set to be the next version all that would be required is to launch W12 universally to cure the Windows 10 bugs instead of withdrawing from phones altogether.

If your phone has W10 running it essentially is always infected

Windows operating system would have kept Apple & Google honest as all they do is compete with each other

And they also removed windows pictures app that was so smooth and I am stuck with a laggy photos app. Also the gestures for closing apps is gone. How I can see that microsoft is improving Windows. Windows 10 mobile bugs killed windows phone so quickly which had 3 percent market share when apple has just around 15 percent share one year before windows 10. Windows 7 was much smoother in all PCs and looked more mature than all OS after that.

But i am not here to argue about my age. Windows 10 is way more advanced then any other windows version till date. Windows 8 actually brought a lot of changes, some of them(like the interface) people did not like. Anyway, the most changes are under the hood. But if you are not technician/admin yeah, is probably hard to see a huge difference if you use the system to just browse the internet. In the meantime i have hard times to see changes in macOS minding the fact that not even now after more then 30 years of so called innovation still can not do a proper USB integration. And well that ugly as'' dock is still there. Actally, the situation you just described is macos, even worse, the interface is the same since ever.

Anonymous, 27 Nov 2018I have used all windows versions 95 onwards except 2000. ... moreThere are lot of changes under the hood. But like other OSes, the most obvious things, are the UI.

I've used MacOs on occasion, and I'm not impressed. There are issues, restarts one has to do after installs that should not require them. Like on windows.
Programs that crashes unexpectedly, like on Windows.
Windows has improved in those areas, that is one example of how windows has improved. And I can't see any mayor differences of the occurrence of those issues today on Mac or on Windows. But there used to be, so clearly things have changed.

Windows supposedly has better support for multiple screens. And Mac support for multiple audio interfaces.
MacOS is probably a bit more streamlined, but mostly probably due to the limited of supported hardware. It is far from the iOS in terms of being a streamlined OS.

The UI of MacOS takes a while to get used to, but the same is true for Windows, for a beginner or someone coming from another OS. No OS with any real depth could ever be easy to use the first time one sits down with it.

Why change OS, for differences that you can neither see nor experience, unless you go digging in the code?

Windows might feel boring, but so will MacOS after a while. It is not the OS that should be exciting, it is what it is used for.

If you want to switch UI often, I would suggest Linux, as there are several of distros that work roughly the same way, so you don't have to start over with everything each time you switch OS.

But yes the ones included are quite basic, so that people that need anything more should look elsewhere.
But that is partly true for android as well. The calender, Mail and Clock apps are not that advanced either. And Gmail isn't that powerful either.

Think about it this way. Imagine having the same android version on your phone for 20 years with a different skin every 6 years. How would you feel?
Cos this is how I feel with windows. I'm probably older than you and this is why I'm bored of it. I have used all windows from 95 onwards and to me it's just the skin that's different.

The OS has undergone huge changes since windows 95. If you don't know that, then you are probably not using anything newer than Windows 7, at most...

But if a company is making a move that the audience don't like, and another competitor don't follow, and they have to go back, well then competition is working.
Although PC gaming is the biggest competitor to console gaming, there is still need for competition in the console gaming market. Otherwise we can't be sure that the companies will keep pushing. They might settle for being the much simpler solution. And that is stil the way many consoles are seen, both by console exclusive gamers, and those that use both. If there is not competition, there is little incitament for console makers, to really push development.

For a while though, Nintendo was a competitor to Sony, when they came out with social gaming. And Sony had to follow in Nintendo's steps. Without competition in the market, there would never have been such a thing.

Whackcar, 27 Nov 2018Microsoft is a better company than Apple by any means, so I... moreMS themselves are to blaim to, for the Windows Phone OS failing. They had the money to put in to the project to get app developers on board. But they didn't. And a smartphone today, missing a lot of common apps, is due to fail.
Also neither Nokia, nor anyone-else put out a new and exciting device running the OS. There were some running both Android and WP. But MS would have needed some exclusive releases that were impressive.
They only had the Nokia 1020, and the only appealed to a small an specific audience, at that time. And many of them spoiled by the 808, that was actually at bit better, in terms of picture quality.

It was almost like MS did not bother, at all. And that seems strange after buying Nokias production, for quite a lot of money.
