Amazon, Google and Samsung top list of tech R&D spending

29 November 2018
Apple spent less than both Alphabet and Samsung for research and development.

Sort by:

A lot of this so called research is repeats of work already done elsewhere, either not published or buried in esoteric papers that 4 people world wide ever read, 2 of whom helped on the original work !!!
How much of it ends up as anything useful ?
I wonder how much they "save" in tax right offs on research.. I wonder how much the difference is between "real" research and tax dodging work ?
Every single one of those named has been repeatedly caught lieing about other matters in the past, why should we believe them now, I never do, I work on the basis that they automatically lie about everything and only tell the truth about even trivial things if forced to...

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2018Apple is #7 in 2018 R&D expenditure. Amazon, Alphabet ... moreYou need to differentiate between total R&D for ALL DIVISIONS and R&D for mobile divisions, from which we dont have real numbers.
For example, its mostly sure that the majority of the R&D Samsung expend goes to their more lucrative business: semiconductors and screens. And i highly doubt that Google expend nearly as much money than Apple, or even Samsung on their phones... cause, cmon look at them lolz.

So Huawei has been copying everyone...
      No R&D spent. Lol.

Apple is #7 in 2018 R&D expenditure. Amazon, Alphabet (Google's parent company) and Samsung are #1, #2 and #4 respectively. However, Apple and its iphone users like to brag that iPhones are more expensive than Notes and Galaxy S'es because so much money is spent on R&D. What a blatant lie from a trillion dollar company that spends so little on R&D compared to lower valued companies.

            So, where's Huawei?

You can give a billion dollars to a team of engineers and they may as well burn it on a project that won't work (like Ara). That happens very often in R&D. It's like a bet. Your team of scientists has a theory, a vague concept. R&D allows them to pursue that concept. You bet this concept will turn into a great product. You bet big $$$ in exchange for potential patents and the right to use them that may come up from this concept.

Elaborate it, try it, try to fix it, try to make it better and better. Trying again until they hit a dead-end. And at that dead-end, well sorry but you lost your bet. Kiss your money goodbye.

So no, I wouldn't question it. Remember Google X, which is "R&D burning 101". That space elevator though... And the time machine that would have required a HUGE metal cylinder to make time "wrap" around it.

Apple keep their money in locker.
Recently in a interview Tim Cook iphone XS Max is most revolutionary product so it is so expensive.
It just a dollar in a day.

This is basically the money spent on developing new technologies, patents, etcetera.

"Among tech companies Intel saw the highest growth of R&D spending compared to 2017 - an increase of 20.9%."

No. That's the percentage of their revenues that they reinvest in R&D. They actually increased by 2% only. But they are the tech company that invests more of their revenue in R&D.

It's Amazon that saw the highest growth with 40% from 2017.
