Microsoft is trying so hard to be relevant in smartphone business. I say if they still won't solve their previous problems then this will continue being a pipe dream. At the end of the day, it's not a matter of releasing a smartphone, dear Microsoft, but rather, solving the problems.

Anonymous, 01 Dec 2018It has Windows, that is th point. It will fail again. Pe... moreWindows have long developed Android App porting to Windows Mobile long back....Both ARM-based ones hence app porting will not be a big deal as such but the moile has to be hit in the first place. If they start like Apple 2007 in Pricing, they can beat everyone IMO. They can't quote nasty price which will turn away and again become another Lumia disaster!

I have anticipated this. If it has 5G with expandable RAM, full-blown Windows OS then this might replace iPhones in few years from now and also iPad. It seems Microsoft doing things right now a days surprisingly!

If they could build a system that switched between the App version of Software and the Desktop version, and probably with a very Windows Mobile 10 look when in phone mode, they could have something going. (And sometimes just the app in enlarged view)
But this time they need to get developers on-board, something they never did for Windows Phone7-8 and Windows Mobile 10.

ethereal, 01 Dec 2018I sent a similar idea to their r&d team about 3-4 years... moreonly 3 - 4 years ago !!
Bit late mate, this rumour about ms/windows has been going for at least a decade and the idea goes back a lot further than that...

Anonymous, 01 Dec 2018It has Windows, that is th point. It will fail again. Pe... moreWhich is why it would have to be dual boot able at a minimum, windows/android, but because folk have long memories, it would need to be multi boot able, just like HTC HD2 was/is, run anything but crapple, but I reckon someone, somewhere probably even managed that as well on hd2 !!!

And how often have we heard this dream ?
If, and its a very huge if, Ms released a device that was a foldable phone/tablet/palmPC, running a full desktop capable version of win10, to get any traction in the enterprise market, you know, the market that Ms had tied up 100% not that long ago, it would have to be able to integrate with ANY desktop machine running win10 absolutely perfectly, folk won't put up with a bodge these days, it will make iPhones look cheap, pull miracles with battery life, it will be very pricey, be much better than anyone else's version of a foldable, need a loan to buy, run android apps perfectly, something even Google can't manage on its own hardware, it'll be very expensive, probably need to be multi os boot able,it'll make sammy foldable price look cheap, need very good add ons, like dock, keyboard, mouse etc, it'll cost more than most top spec phones + a high spec laptop, not have a weird screen ratio, like other surface devices it will cost an arm and a leg,and be perfect in almost anyway that you can imagine, oh, and did I mention the price ?
I will put a fiver up to a charity that such a device does NOT appear, from anyone, in 2019,or one that even manages half the above, which even if somebodies wet dream comes true and they did release a machine with even half the above capabilities, it just will not sell in big numbers, A) because of price, and B) cos folk are going to be very wary of foldable for the first couple of generations, add that on top of premium price for being Ms, then some more because its foldable, then even more cos nothing 5G will be cheap, your now looking at a $2500-3000+ device, even enterprise market won't pay out for many at that price point..
Dream on, we have heard it every 18 months since about 1999...

I sent a similar idea to their r&d team about 3-4 years back already. Looks like they are adapting to this idea only now though. Interesting! I wish them good luck for this implementation!
