eSIM is a good idea if it allows dual lines active with a single SIM card tray. I have a Samsung S8+ Duos which save me from carrying extra phone when travel. I have a local SIM in the 2nd line. This is required when I travel. It is used for people that picks me up, to contact me at the arriving airport. Having a local phone number is a must for frequent travelers. New iPhones supports dual lines now via its eSIM. Google needs to make this move as Google Fi is such a good service for people who travel. Making the newer phones like Pixel to have the capability of dual lines would probably boost its sales.

xiaomi also already have e-sims in Mi 8 & Pocofone F1.
To access the e-sims, use the MiRoaming apps.

was the cdma network with esn is the same .......in canada bell and telus was using same antena but we were never alouwd to switch network with the same phone they hade complete controle ....esim looks to me like they want that controle back

sim card only stores few kilobytes of data. those data surely can be stored in secured chip like tpm in laptop since years ago, but telco community is basically stingy and wants to keep control grip.

-eSIMs ARE SUPPOSED TO GIVE YOU freedom and flexibility to choose ANY network YOU WANT, as many as you want, just as you said, postpaid or prepaid because there should be a list of all mobile network carriers from the whole wide world at the palm of your fingertips to choose from on your demand from the mobile networks settings.
2. You are completely right that regular SIM cards allow you to transfer them anywhere you want and that you can swap them out whenever you want whether you have horrible data speeds or outrageous call/text and LTE roaming data rates or any other issue.

SIM cards get damaged because literally everyone ALWAYS touches the metal contact pads leaving grease, bacteria and other chemicals on the metal conducting SIM pad and THAT damages the SIM card. It doesn't just break by itself as it has no moving parts. Also, ALL phones contribute to SIM contact pad damage as whenever you put in a SIM into the SIM slot of a phone and take it out, you can see perfectly straight scratch lines from the PINS that TOUCH the metal SIM contact pad. - So there's that, everything is a contributing factor to SIM damage, humans and the phones themselves. Most important issue of all is the "dispose of them as frequently as you want" line which you wrote - that is just PLAIN WRONG. Are you a promoter of excess waste? Like this world isn't already polluted enough?
4. eSIMS are good at saving space on the phone's internals and that is one of the SOLE reasons of its inception. (Take a look back at the original SIM card , then the micro one and then the nano one) Why was there so much plastic waste that kills our planet produced in the first place?!
5. Soldering the RAM and internal storage on Apple devices is indeed planned obsolescence and downright wrong but this is not the case here as you're trying to imply that it's a pattern Google is taking as well. The same pattern from Apple that you're talking about and taken by Google was not including expandable storage which is the MicroSD slot and just making higher memory variants at exorbitant prices - which, again, is the pattern you're talking about that was copied from Apple to essentially squeeze the last bit of cash from your pocket like you say.

I'm not denying that it won't eventually become mainstream, because i know it likely will, just like the removal of headphone jack got mainstream. I would just like to reiterate an old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Just like the removal of headphone jack, the removal of sim card slot doesn't benefit consumers, yet it happens just because it benefits companies, which are already making more profit than they should. That is why i, as a consumer, don't approve it.

I would appreciate e-SIM technology if phones were getting smaller. That is obviously not the case. Phones have only been getting bigger as of late, so it makes zero sense to remove a tiny nano-sim slot from phones. In fact these phablets should be offering dual-sim slot as a standard feature.
e-SIM is unnecessary and pointless.

Why do you think the eSIM tech will not let you choose a different provider with just one tap and you can be able to have multiple network active (like dual sim)?

eSIM would be great but they should make the hybrid SD/SIM card slot standard to give the user an option when travelling to a country and want it use local prepaid service

eSIMs are more about locking you up to a postpaid network and to a single device rather than giving you freedom and flexibility to choose any network you want, as many as you want, postpaid or prepaid.
Regular SIM cards allow you to transfer them anywhere you want: your other phones, your tablet, your mobile wifi and yes, even to a friend's phone if you need to make a call and your phone battery is dead. With regular SIMs, you just transfer and swap SIMs and you're good to go, no activation needed. Not so with eSIMs.
If you have horrible data speeds in a certain location, you can simply swap in your current SIM with a multitude other prepaid SIMs from other networks. You can do so as often as you want or occasionally to take advantage of limited time call/data/text promos. You can't do that with eSIMs.
When you travel and your postpaid SIM charges you outrageous call/text and LTE roaming data rates, you can simply take it out and buy a local prepaid SIM in the country you are staying. Better yet, you can use a dual SIM phone and put both SIMs in the two slots. You can't do that with eSIMs.
You can have as many prepaid network SIMs as you want and swap all of them or replace and dispose of them as frequently as you want when the SIM gets spammed/damaged, etc. Not so with eSIMs.
The only thing eSIMs are good at is saving space on the phone's internals and security. But you can lock regular SIMs too with a PIN if you are concerned about security/unauthorized use.
Long story short: eSIMs make your digital life a lot more RESTRICTED and MISERABLE. Its just like the move from REMOVABLE batteries to SEALED batteries and from INTERNAL storage WITH micro SD expansion to INTERNAL storage ONLY with no micro sd expansion. There are way more disadvantages than advantages and they are not 'technological improvements'.
Solder the RAM and the internal storage of a Macbook PRO so you can't change/reuse/transfer or upgrade the RAM/internal storage. Don't you see the pattern? Google is a fast learner from Apple.
And whether you like it or not, carriers and manufacturers with vested interests will push these technological 'advances' (more like planned obsolescence changes really) down your throat anyway to lock you up and squeeze the last bit of cash from your pocket.
