Google Photos restricts some video formats from unlimited storage

11 December 2018
Some users were abusing Google Photos to pass files off for free online storage.

Anonymous, 12 Dec 2018I think it's a slimy move by them to market it as unlimited... moreIt is unlimited storage for video and photos. Not for files faked as video just to get free upload. I side with this to Google, it isn't fair to them from the user side. And also to us end users as those people take the space unfairly

vrvly, 12 Dec 2018It was always limited, about as much as data plans from carriers.Indeed!
And if you happen to live in a bad coverage area, then you're better off with a 128+GB SD which happen to go on sale every now and then.

Who needs microsd storage when we already have cloud storage

        - says the guy who said 16/32gb of storage is enough despite paying for a 4k video capable phone.

Free and fast internet is everywhere. Do not be a luddite and keep up with technology

        - every cloud storage white knights who make fun of flash drives/ssd users.

Hope that your beloved unlimited internet is the next one to take a hit. Lmao.

Just having a beer, 12 Dec 2018And you would provide unlimited storage free of charge for ... moreI think it's a slimy move by them to market it as unlimited only to impose restrictions as time goes by and the service gets popular.

Good thing Jobs did not managed to sell to the gullible public how outdated expandable storage is and that cloud storage is the future of post-hard drive world. Lmao.

Anonymous, 12 Dec 2018google photos backup is crap photos get deleted automatica... moreBeen using Google photos for over 5 years, never lost anything. Are you sure they get deleted, or they just get automatically backed up and later on when accessing them on mobile you don't see them as you don't have internet connection?

Akinaro, 12 Dec 2018OEMs = hey we give you super 4k video recording! But we giv... moreAnd you would provide unlimited storage free of charge for users for every video they make? How much storage would you need? How would you obtain it and how would you make money from it?

I have photos and videos from the last 5-7 years on google backup... never asked me for anything and I can access all the old content... with a pixel phone is better...

The backups are nothing but data to train their AI models.

No doubt they lead in the software industry because of so much data available for training.

                          google photos backup is crap
                          photos get deleted automatically
waste of providing free back up.. just a marketing gimmick

I have a lot of RAW photos backed up so that's going to be a problem.
Also why there isn't an option to exclude RAW photos from backup?

                              . . . Why I am not surprised......
