It is, probably, the only possible way, because modern smartphones are too thin. Of course, you can try bending it 180 degress twice to get an S-shaped screen of the bottom instead of U-shaped, but that's most likely covered in the patent or is just too costly or hard.
Well, from a designer perspective, a chin is no good. However, Apple can't bend IPS, so they ended up with equally thick as hell bezels on an iPhone Xr. Is it good visually? Not really. Not to mention, some smartphones, like a Vivo Apex/Nex, has the chin only a little bit thicker than bezels on an iPhone X without any screen bending ( https://i.imgur.com/Nl4GiKa.png ). An iPhone may look symmetric enough (the back cover is a bit of a let down here though), but, honestly, is a total loser here visually.

      If the manufacturer can save the price, then great. But, from a designer perspective it does break the symmetry principles.

            let me tell you Iphone X can get rid from chin (apple can make chin and side bezel look like it have same size), no android phone until this comment written have no chin, even mi mix, find x, etc that claim full display have it. Iphone x still got the smallest chin in smartphone world

              Djeez, so many people have no bloody idea how things work with their ridiculous remarks.

              Amoled screens would have a smaller bezel all-around because they don't need backlight or sidelight. But backlight would make the LCD-panel thicker so the onlya to make a device thin is a sidelit-LCD. Which should be obvious!
