No, it's not Pie, but it's a step forward.

Just updated my Nokia 3, looks like they have removed the format as internal storage option. Make sure you have backed up all your data before the update.

So, some info about drivers for mobile chipsets:

The GPU design and the reference drivers and their sources are produced by the original designers, such as ARM and Imagination. MediaTek can't "close" the sources because they didn't write them to begin with, and to suggest that MediaTek would offer drivers in object format or plain binary blobs to their customers is absurd. They would never be able to obtain customers that way.

This delay is not because MediaTek are refusing to open source drivers that they don't own or created to begin with, it's because HMD can't do a quick, clean, Trebble-supported Android 8 build for this phone, because there are implications on performance and size.

Not surprising, Mediatek has ALWAYS been closed-source on it's drivers since inception & hardly ever releases drivers for manufacturers. This also explains why Redmi Note 3 & Redmi Note 4 running on Mediatek chipsets NEVER got an Android upgrade. Hey Mediatek, it's almost the end of 2018 & yet you can't even bother to do AT LEAST some open sourcing your drivers like Qualcomm did?!

Anonymous, 22 Dec 2018You're wrong. There is a significant performance decreas... moreYou can have android 8 or 9 without the treble support. It just requires more work to be done...

Normally if your phone is slower after update you just need to make factory reset to it. It should Remedy problems in most cases.

I am not sure if treble itself make phone slower... it does make common interface to drivers so if the phone does support treble it makes it easier to port older drivers to new os version. It is possible that the layer between the os and driver can reduce speed but I have not seen any article handling this case.

Faheem, 21 Dec 2018I think HMD not to blame here, Its MT chipsets. They dont r... moreYou're wrong.

There is a significant performance decrease going from Android 7 to 8, thanks to the so called "Trebble support" in Android 8. Because the Nokia 3 is relatively weak in performance, HMD can't push a clean Android 8 build to the phone, it would have too big impact on performance, and they had to spend many months pulling most of Android 8's features into the phone's Android 7 build.

Don't hold your breath waiting for Android 9 on the Nokia 3.

Mediatek devices rarely, if ever receive security patches (real, kernel patches, not just a cosmetic security patch string update to the current). Getting a whole Android system update is nothing short of a mirracle.

As the article points out, MediaTek powered phones rarely get updates regardless of the manufacturer.
To add a little perspective, my own Moto G5S Plus, which was way more expensive than this Nokia 3, only got 8.1 like a month ago.

Good news, there is hope for my Nokia 2 then.

Where are all those users who were blaming Nokia / HMD as Chinese company? This phone has just 2GB RAM & 16GB phone memory. Phones launched with this specifications by all those Chinese companies are still stuck at Nougat. Thanks Nokia HMD for the software support even to low end phones!

Nokia is doing great job. Even cheaper phones getting regular updates

I think HMD not to blame here, Its MT chipsets. They dont release drivers software for latest OS.
