New hands-on video shows off a foldable phone by Xiaomi

03 January 2019
The video’s authenticity is questioned by its leaker, the reliable @evleaks. It's still a cool device, though.

i still dont get why we would want this

Xiaomi or not, it's a nice one among other foldable phones that teased to us recently. This phone has a nice bezel from all its side.

Macbeth, 04 Jan 2019I personally have no use for a foldable phoneIm glad your not in charge

Anonymous, 04 Jan 2019Looks interesting. Not pretty, but interesting. Obviously, ... moreToday people consider even a 10mm thick phones as ugly and bulky... how will these people accept a phone which is atleast 25 mm thick ? Maybe more thick than that... these foldable phones will be passing gimmicks

Nice but I hope it doesn't look cheap metal product like a toy

Anonymous, 04 Jan 2019Impossible with current and future tech. The best you ca... moreWhat an arrogant comment how are you going to say "future tech" you've limited the concept to only foldable approaches to increase screen size and as usual used the forbidden impossible word

Smh how much times will humanity have to do the 'impossible" just like planes and the combustion engine

I personally have no use for a foldable phone

Kingslayer, 04 Jan 2019Cool concept. Can't believe Samsung has worked on foldab... moreEasy to copy, hard to innovate.

                    Cool concept.

Can't believe Samsung has worked on foldables for a decade and Xiaomi born in 2010 might release one even sooner.

Tonberry, 04 Jan 2019Tablets are dying since they are just oversized smartphones... moreHmm , I wouldn’t say so about it being totally different , you got to think when you fold it , how longs it gonna last .. before the display gets worn out , and how thick is the device going to be in a pocket, also how will you add a case to it... or a screen protector. As such the tech is new and even if you could take these kinks out.. it will be 5-10 years before they can shrink it down assuming it takes off.. , as I feel most people won’t buy this compared to just a smart phone..
So you taking about a device twice as thick as most smartphone so 14mm when folded , trying to fit that into a jeans pocket.. although it’s designed to bend it doesn’t seem to be designed to bend from the top down as such this could be a weak point of bending in the pocket.. like when it used to bend on the phones power button on Apple..

Anonymous, 04 Jan 20196.5 inch turns into 14 inch display pleaseImpossible with current and future tech.

The best you can hope (also impossible w current tech) is the three-piece as shown in Westworld. From 6 inches to 10 inches basically. However you need ultra thin component an ability to three piece the battery. Which is why it is not feasible yet, however with further miniaturization it would be.

To go to 14 from 6.5 though you need 5 folds. Every makes the thickness twice. So 5 folds is 16x the ogirinal thickness, so every piece has to become 16x thinner than currently. That is impossible with current and future tech. Electronics can't get so thin in this universe. There are physical limits. 4x (three fold) is possible just not yet, which is why most do 2-fold (2x) which is semi doable, however bad looking...

Alien , 04 Jan 2019Bleah! I don't know if I'll ever feel comfortable without ... moreTablets are dying since they are just oversized smartphones. If someone has a smartphone, it usually doesn't really make sense to buy another device that's basically the same, only bigger, and then carry them both everywhere. But if you can have a single device that can work as both, it's totally different.

Looks great. It will need however different kind of camera/s made with thickness in mind. Wouldn't want such device otherwise, hi end camera for hi end price is a must.

i hope to see the screen spread open again, just to see if it has wrinkle or not (as previous first foldable device - i forgot the name)
                              its cool concept though

                                  Bleah!
I don't know if I'll ever feel comfortable without a solid display. I can totally see it's applications and possibilities, but when it comes to smartphones it's not such a wow factor.
Why? How many people actually use tablets today? It's a dying niche.
Maybe in 3-5 years it will be ok, but for now I'll stick to the classic.
Id rather have a "laptop" like smartphone with a real keyboard so I can easily code..

I think it looks amazing, and really convenient to use. I have no idea if it's real, but I really hope it is.

it's just amazing..... let's hope it will cost less than 1000 euros in 2021.

Wow. That looks really uninspiring. Thankfully, Xiaomi isn't a pioneer company that anyone relies on to truly innovate. Otherwise, the mobile industry would be in shambles.

Samsung and LG will ensure that we're taken care of in regards of steering mobile technology in new directions.
