Sony Ericsson explains how hard it is to update to Android 4.0 ICS

08 December, 2011
It's a lengthy process that starts with writing some custom software and ends with waiting for certification.

Android = bugs, force closes and unstable. That's what I've learnt after owning 4 android phones :)

Back when all cellphones have their own simple UI's we were kinda satisfied, we had our own individualities.
Then, someone learned to modify OS'es.
People started to crave for more.
Now, there's android all over many brands. You can do everything and yet people are never satisfied.
We learn few things and strive to learn more ....and get more.
What kind insatiable beings have we become? :(

keithz, 08 Dec 2011What nonsense. If the Android OEMs didn't create customize... moreYou are right if they stopped bringing out 10 models a week etc with their own layer on top things would be fine..Due to the fact they have this extra layer ie sense, touchwhizz they have to do more work BUT also then the operaters put their own bloatware on top as well taking even more time to release ANY damn updates..

Operaters we dont want your bloatware,we only use you to get data and fone calls ,thats it..Ok lock it to your network because your subsidising it but pack it in with the bloatware..

The thing is not many folk can buy sim free so they have to buy contract leading to this extra layers,,so they spend time hacking the phone to rid of it...Arrrggghh it just a big mess no wonder a sim free nexus/nexus s/nexus one is preferred by some people....

kton, 08 Dec 2011All I read was: "excuse excuse excuse excuse"All I'm reading from you is "moan, moan, moan, moan". Grow up and realise that things don't happen by magic. If you want to moan at someone, direct your energy into questioning why Google doesn't allow true open development of the so-called "Android Open Source Project".

keithz, 08 Dec 2011What nonsense. If the Android OEMs didn't create customize... moreThe only nonsense is Google's model of pretending to be open but then not being open during development. I have more confidence in the competency of Sony Ericsson engineers to write good software for embedded devices than I do have in the Google Kids.

so a multi billion dollar company thinks upgrading to a new version of the same os is so hard..so how do some hackers sitting at home such as cyanogen mod do it in 2 weeks???

baah, 08 Dec 2011I still use android 2.2 on my Galaxy S....and its smooth as... moreIt's not a case of fixing something that already works but upgrading and advancing to better. Some people also only use a mobile phone to make calls. If they work does that also mean we shouldn't advance? Personally I will be upgrading to a dedicated Android 4 phone to take full advantage of a bigger, full hd, screen and no hardware buttons (other than volume and power) also more memory as ICS let's you use the full 16/32GB etc rather than just upto 1gb app memory. :)

What nonsense. If the Android OEMs didn't create customized models for each and every carrier (admittedly SE is better at this than others like Samsung), and didn't release slightly tweaked new models every month, and didn't heavily skin the OS, the work would be considerably less.

Also, the OEMs have gotten lazy. They didn't have to write their own OS. They got it for free from Google. Their only work should have been integration with the hardware. But because they've built so many devices, and they've built so many variations of each model and they've skinned the OS, the just aren't as motivated to put out any major OS upgrades, knowing that they aren't getting paid the upgrade.

Let me put it this way. If news is about non-Android, every Android users of all the brands sit together to beat that non-Android brand.

If news is about Android, then all the Android users start beating the brands using the Android.

WTF is this seriously? It looks like all (or most) come here just to find a reason to BS on each others.

Why these most of the trolls r samsung fans ?
They always come up with their shi*ty excuses even when no one asked them to do so... ,they seem to rather jealous of the fact that SE is updating their whole 2011 lineup to ICS while samsung will only provide the update for galaxy s2 and put others in dustbin...
Hey samsung owners... Good luck with ur 2.2 and 2.3
