The Google Pixel Stand is an unreliable, expensive mess

13 January 2019
From lack of fast charging, buggy notifications to missing Live Photo mode, the list of issues is as long as the list of features.

I am a Pixel stand user. I had bought this device in Feb. 2019 in India. I started to experiencing the slow charging issue just a month later. Whenever I use to put my Pixel 3 for charging it use to show 'Charging rapidly' for a very brief period and then it showed 'Charging slowly'.
When I raised this issue to Google support team they couldn't provide any solution for more than a month. Then I received a software update for Pixel stand and after this update whenever I used to put the phone on Pixel stand it used to show only 'Charging wirelessly'.
What an amazing solution from TEAM GOOGLE. They think that customers won't come to know about phone getting slowly charged if the it is not such display message on the screen. They asked me to send my device back in exchange of a repayment device, which I haven't revived yet. Never expected this from Google.

speedingcheetah, 14 Jan 2019No more heat than charging with a cable. I have had phones ... moreRather than just telling, do some measurements....

It would be quite easy to see the difference in the effect delivered to the wireless charger, and the effect received by the device.

UNFORTUNATELY there are NO known technology with wireless energy transfer without loss, and that loss ends as heat, and due to the close contact heats the device, unless it is actively cooled as well. (natural convective cooling in vertical helps somewhat)

Sure a device ALSO gets heated with regular charging. But with wireless it gets heated by one extra source...

Yes, I also have the same issue. Once my phone started with rapid charging and then soon it started showing - charging slowly (4 hours remaining).

I have had phones quite warm with cord charging as well. My Pixel 3 actually has less a tad heat when charging via the stand. I seen it via a FLIR cam. Even so, some heat is normal and will not harm the battery. The battery manufactures and specs of the battery has a acceptable range. The phone will slow charging if it detects it is to warm. My OG Pixel XL is over 2 yrs old, and has had at least a few times of getting very warm while charing in the car, to the point where the phone had to shut down, and even today, the battery still lasts at least 2 days of normal use easy, same as it did the first day i got it.

Shellyman Infinity, 13 Jan 2019Agreed, the first gen Pixels hardly had issues i had 2 replaced Pixels (1st gen). One was battery, one was signal issue. After that, at the end of its 2 eyar life, the phone was a mess with its RAM management, and could not keep up with more intensive tasks (due to its CPU underclocked?? I don't know)

I still regret having spent money on it, should've got s8 or something...

Anonymous, 13 Jan 2019Because Google hopes you get a new pixel each year...Of course it is in the vendors interest that we kill our devices quickly, buy a new one, and throw the 'old' away rather than passing it on still good.

My point was that people at GSMA should know better than seeing fast wireless charging as a good thing....

Which part did you not understand?

                                  1) That wireless chargers generate heat - the more powerful the more heat?
                                  2) That total battery life is deteriorated when batteries are charged heated?
