The 10x zoom is hybrid zoom. The 5x zoom is 5x16 = 80mm

It is optical guys. The zoom ratio comes when you divide the longest focal length with the shortest. On this case if the telephoto is 160mm if you divide it with the wide angle lens which should be 16mm this is 10x based on the wide angle. I you divide it with the main snapper which should be smth around 28mm should be 5x-6x zoom. Until now smartphones had one main camera and one telephoto usually with double the focal length of the main one (S9+ has a 26mm main camera and a 52mm for telephoto camera that means 2x zoom).

In principle zoom gives us an indication how close we can reach to the subject comparing it with the widest focal length our camera has.

e.g. an 70-200 lens and a 24-70 lens both offer approx 3x zoom. However with the 70-200 you are immediately closer to the subject.

Don't mess up with smartphones where this serves primarily as a marketing trick.

Zendroid, 16 Jan 2019Hybrid, not optical! A mix between optical and digital zoom... moreIf you would have read more carefully, then the Hybrid Zoom in this case means - 5x optical zoom and it has a wide angle lens, which gives it a double zoom itself.

Zendroid, 16 Jan 2019Exactly. So not optical! Turn it how ever you want, it's no... moreIt's not digital at all. It's totally optical. But here is the trick: it's 10x optical zoom when compared to the ultrawide angle camera (16mm - 160mm, 35mm equivalent) and that's why they call it hybrid. 10x optical zoom must be around 270mm in 35mm equivalent.
However, comparing 160mm of the Oppo to the 52mm of the Xs max or even the 80mm of the Mate 20 pro, it's an achievement.

anon, 16 Jan 2019The 10x hybrid optical zoom is achieved by combining its 5x... moreExactly. So not optical! Turn it how ever you want, it's not optical when there's digital.

But yes, it's a kinky sale stunt on those who doesn't know the difference.

Whackcar, 16 Jan 2019It is hybrid zoom indeed. 5x optical & 10x hybrid. It's... moreYou should read the article again. They added a phisical, extra wide-angle module (about 16mm equiv. in 35mm terms) and the zoom module has a 32-160mm range (which by itself is "only" 5X), when you add the 16mm camera with the 160mm telephoto reach, you get exactly that: a 10X FULLY OPTICAL zoom. Because that's how optical zoom is calculated, from the lowest to the highest reach. There is NOTHING DIGITAL about it. Huawei Mate 20 Pro is not even close (80mm highest reach versus 160mm of what Oppo has).

Zendroid, 16 Jan 2019Hybrid, not optical! A mix between optical and digital zoom... moreThis is not a digital and optical hybrid, it is a hybrid of different actual cameras and lenses that achieve 10x optical zoom range. Did you not read the article?

It is hybrid zoom indeed. 5x optical & 10x hybrid. It's similar to what P20 Pro/M20 Pro does (3x optical zoom & 5x hybrid zoom).

Still, if the image quality is good, then it would be a nice achievement indeed.

Hybrid, not optical! A mix between optical and digital zoom isn't new. Most flagships have 2x optical and the rest digital. So don't get your shorts wet over this old technology.
