Weekly poll: are hole-less phones the future or just a gimmick?

27 January 2019
There were two hole-less phones announced in as many days. Though the number of real-world issues solved by them seems lower than that.

Can you please tell us if a smartphone don't have memory card all data can only save in device, one day the device get damage how can you restore those important data? The solution is with memory card you can eject the card and restore the data to another device.
Hole-less is just a gimmick.
Some hole would be fine.

Another needless potentially pricey "trend" that is unnecessarily skimping out on useful features and restricting options of function on devices.

The future. But for now i would prefer my phone to have ports. Eventually i guess i'll have to ditch my wired headphones and i already charge my phone on a wireless charger most of the time, unless i need it charged asap.

AnonD-731363, 28 Jan 2019Well i really think this is the future. No ports no trays... morewell.. how do you flash roms then? wireless USB are literally just recievers. and there are no blocks where you can actually place a device to read from

I think it is the future, but for now it's a gimmick. It seems very cool, but lots of stuff that people might want to connect to a phone needs a cable right now, so a hole-less phone would be kind of inconvenient.

To my honest opinion this is the real future something than many of my custoemrs would like and would buy.
Ports trays etc. Who cares. They are not essential as we may see.
Removing them woont restrict phone from using.
If its for future then BRING IT ON.

Kiyasuriin, 27 Jan 2019Nope. a gimmick. Removing parts is NOT innovation. wtf is ... moreWell i really think this is the future.
No ports no trays it will be cool and it will looks just great.
This only proves that ports and trays are not essential.

Anonymous, 27 Jan 2019Removing features = innovation ? Wth is happeningMan what kind of features?
Nothing of that is essential and if wireless tech can covers it noone would care.

More like a gimmicks for users, But a dream for manufacturers. Easy and cheap to produce, no need to worry about cutouts or aditional space for sd or sim cards. I can see this concept stickimg to the end and definitely some vtands will adopt it in a future, well I hope users will not take it as granted, it is convenient for OEMs but not for users. Consumers should lead the prioritizations and dictate to manufacturers what should be in a phone.

Me, 28 Jan 2019What about flashing roms on these? Seems not really practic... moreWell, those that want to flash rom (probably less than 5% of the market, and I'm optimistic) will still have some phone with port in the future to go with :)

About the poll, by definition it's a gimmick, since it's doesn't add anything to the use. A nice looking gimmick, but a gimmick none the less. Same kind of gimmick than bezel-less phone or Notch/camera hole, so it could really be the futur, even if it's for the worst.

Dude, 28 Jan 2019Gimmick is not the right word. It's a temporary 'solution' ... moreThe topic isn't about phones with in-display hole for the front camera. It's about phones without ports (For eg. USB), slots (micro SD & SIM slot) and any physical buttons.

It's a gimmick, and I think Google and Apple will not be happy. Both Google and Apple want to dominate desktop. Microsoft continuum already demonstrated the possibility. With USB 3.1 port, Google and Apple can offer connectivity to big monitors and focus on replacing desktops. Most people have cellphones and will not need home pc if they can connect it to a docking station and use it for everything.

It is exciting to live in a smartphone world where Vivo has a significant voice. Even if you don't buy into its particular conception of the phone, Its voice opens up more space for smartphone vendors and users. The mini-revolution in 2018 smartphones starts with Vivo, with its in-display fingerprint sensor (world's first), and true full screen with motorized pop-up camera (again world's first). At least for 2018, Vivo injected more imagination into the rather stale smartphone world than that of Apple and Samsung combined. Viva la VIVO.

Gimmick is not the right word. It's a temporary 'solution' before the true invention, full display bezelless.

DaleCooper, 27 Jan 2019Definitely a gimmick. 50% thinks it's a future. Damn!I wonder how many of them are confusing it with "phones without punch-hole display".

I can plug my phone on the wall charger hold it in my hand as I normally do and use it for browsing, watching videos, etc can I do it with same convenience with wireless charging ?
Are wireless headphones as good as Audiophile grade headphones if yes then why do Pro DJs and Producers use those long wired headphones ?
Do all traditional PCs support wireless data transfer technologies ? I use a WiFi dongle for my PC but data transfer wireless from PC to smartphone and vice versa is a pain USB is much better I would say the best. Maybe many stupid teenagers be fooled by the brainwashing these manufacturers are putting up like the holeless phones, notches, display holes, removal of the headphone jack and so on.
Focus on things like the battery life, improvement in camera and audio playback quality, 4k HDR recording and displays, etc. IP 68 water resistant phones are more than safe enough, for may years we used phones without any water resistance fine enough for two years so do these manufacturers assume that people are suddenly become stupid enough to realize that smartphones can get damaged by water and other liquids ? Are they trying to prove that while SMARTPHONES ARE GETTING SMART AND PEOPLE DUMB ?
