It's smart but very unpractical. You will have to wipe / clean the camera every single time you want to use it.

Just put it inthe notification bar! It's like a notification icon, we wouldnt care about thatand we wont lose any (or many only little) display space

Actually the solution is pretty simple. Have a mechanical slider on the right side of the phone, user can use the thumd to slide the pop-up selfie camera up and down.

Have you seen the LG V10/V20? Those phones constantly display icons on the top bar. I think Oppo would do the same.
Obviously you'll lose some screen area due to this, but it might be better than looking at a distracting hole all the time... In my opinion.

What about when we are watching a video or a picture on the screen? Do we still have icons in the way hiding the camera or do we get dead pixels? I'd rather prefer slim bezels with the camera.

Why can't they make an underscreen camera like;
The display is one of those "Transparent" LG Displays that Linus used to play games with weeks ago and when not in camera use, the display won't have a circular dead pixels as it hides the camera underneath.
In camera mode, the part of the display will be turned off through programming, revealing the camera unit to shoot through.
