LG posts record profits for 2018, mobile division still losing money

The company sees 5G and new form factors to turn around the fortunes of its struggling phone making arm.

LG is one of earliest players in the smartphone business. Yet through all these years, LG Mobile has been a money-losing enterprise year after year, without making money in any year. LG has never made one single smartphone model that actually sells in reasonable volumes over all these year. Although LG has entered most of the markets in the world, but majority of their phones are sold through US phone operators via contracts, i.e., you sign up for a phone contract and you get your free LG phone. Very few people in any part of the world have actually paid for LG phones. That is how sad the whole LG Mobile operation is. If LG smartphone operation is up for sale, I don't see any takers since there is nothing special in LG's phone related technologies.

So maybe the next generation of LG phones can do it too. Moreover the G7 right now is available in India for a great price ie. just 29990 INR (423 USD) and within few months the V40 will drop too.

          uig8ogyi8, 31 Jan 2019There phones haw slow cpu, looks good but build qualituy is... moreLG flagships have the same CPUs as other flagships in benchmarks they may be slightly behind but in real world usage they are great performers without any lags and the UI is very fluid check YouTube reviews of both the V30 and V40 their premium flagships. Build quality is great along with IP68 they are MIL STD certification too infact build quality is on par with Samsung and better than most of the Chinese brands. The V30 was a great smartphone the V40 is flawed in the battery department otherwise it's a great phone too. The problem is they price their phones way higher than they deserve. Infact they should have launched the V40 for around 750 USD like in India they launched it for 49990 INR (704 USD). Infact the G7 is now available in India for just 29990 INR (424 USD).
          If LG fixes the two problems the V40 had ie. the battery and the high price the V50 can be damn great phone. Infact LG should try to price their flagships higher than the Chinese and lower than Samsung.

            They should make Android one devices with pixel like camera it will hit

              LG washing machines are great, phones kinda underwhelming but great for headphone jack lovers

                  LG would be better off just partnering with HTC. Still shocking that the company that you'd expect to compete against Samsung, offers such a poor flagship range.

                        LG should sell their smartphone division to more competent management (preferably Xiaomi or Oppo).

                          It's not hard to work out why. Their phones are overpriced and have bad battery life. If they address those 2 issues they will sell phones much easier as their phones are good in most other areas, build quality, camera, features like quad dac and micro sd support etc.

                            LG should:

                            Two low ends with 3 + 32 , HD screen and 13MP + 5 MP depth, 5.5" and 6" notchless

                            One midrange with SD636, 4 + 64 , 1080p, 16MP + 8 MP, 6"

                            G8 = lcd QHD notchless, 6 /128 , 16MP wide /12MP uwa, 6"

                            V50 = poled QHD notchless, 8/256 , 48MP wide, 12MP UWA and 13MP tele, 6.3" , pen

                              'LG' suffers in part, from poor customer service in the U. States. I wonder if their customer service elsewhere is better, worse, or the same.
