Techies, including reviewers, are responsible. Techies moan at bezels, and think that glass is a "premium" material, they insist on the thinest designs. Makers see this and nearly every damned device has glass a glass back. Designers also make devices slimmer and slimmer, encroaching on space available for 3.5mm jacks, batteries. Bezels are removed, again to reduce the footprint, and bits are chopped out of the display to accomplish this.

Samsung has worked on this for half a decade. The garbage Huawei rushed out was an idea Samsung threw in the trash because it doesn't work. You'll never get sufficient accuracy with an optical sensor behind a display.
Edit, make that close to a decade. I remember people at XDA found references to an under-display fingerprint reader already in the GS2 code. That one was some sort of electromagnetic solution, that obviously didn't work either.

As people are saying, those are the new form factors while these are just an upgrade from the same old.

Whatever the case I'm anxiously waiting.

So literally a Note9 with slimmed down bezels, a camera cutout (because they had to put it somewhere) and in-screen fingerprint because Huawei did it and they literally have no choice. They're even copying Huawei's reverse wireless charging, kudos Samsung for being a copycat with your 10 year phone. What's so special about this? To me it's just an usual yearly-based upgrade. Nothing special what a 10 year anniversary phone should be, considering what Apple did with the X, which was a totally different phone - completly different design, different operating mode, different design on the front and the back as well (not just another camera hole and that's it), new materials (stainless steel instead of the overly used aluminium).

Android - Prime, 05 Feb 2019Thinner yet packs more battery than its predecessor... Sams... moreI can easily see a bigger battery from a slimmer device. Would be easy to incorporate the 45% thinner display that was invented for the Galaxy F to accommodate more room for a larger battery and possibly even a larger camera sensor without having the common camera hump on the rear.
Super excited for Feb 20. I wonder what Chinese company will slip an unveiling in before then???

Not a fan of the back panel, but the battery increase is appreciated.
It's just disappointing that Samsung didn't make any drastic changes to the design for their "anniversary" edition phone...
