The cost of designing and developing new chipset (as well as other peripherals, etc) all falls under R&D. For any tech/hardware company, R&D is one of the larger expenditure. And you can't go cheap on that because you lag behind when you do.
Look at SONY, prime example of tech company that gone wrong. They cut budgets on R&D, and taht resulted in what was a huge brand in 90's and 00's into nothingness. TV (only a premium one because oflow margin...as they do not have capabilities to run themselves now thank you Samsung for that), PC/Laptop (rememebr VAIO? They stopped being innovated and kept churning same designs), Walkman that died (despite the high level of audio equipments they still produce as well). Their smartphone....is just sad.
Now, that doesn't mean Apple's phones are actually worth what they are selling themselves for but still some people just look at literal cost of materials and manufacturing ONLY. Like, do you know how much you got to pay those engineers?

Of course on newer phones u have the class leading A12 chip. On androids an expensive phone has best chip and midrange phone and lower end phone has less costly chipset.
And also apple and other brands put a price on the phone but they don't point a gun to your head to buy their phone. A customer has a choice of many handsets depending on his affordability. Also if somebody wants an iphone they don't have to go for the most expensive and the can still choose much cheaper iphone 7 or 8. Also the price of 1650 might be the price in Slovakia but in the UK it's 1200

Made in china just becaue if their device will be made in USA for a 12 dollars oper hour of a basic labourer even Iphone 3Gs would cost 5000 bucks.
XS max 512GB variant would go for 250 000 dollars or more.

I am not saying iOS is better or worse than android but bashing apple in this way is not justified. they are good and no 1 for some reason and must be doing some things right that people buy them even at these prices. May be security, stability and longevity of their device is important to them or may be something else but the truth is iphones are good just little expensive (may be 10-20%).

Better to buy used car or motorbike with that money. Too much overpriced. Perhaps Bill Gates or Warren Buffet will buy this phone. I am satisfied with my own phone now. If you want jewelry then buy some on jewelry store. If you want phones then get some decent phone with competitive price but clearly not this kind of iphone.
