You forgot to mention that you need to update Messenger to the latest version, otherwise it won't work. After updating, it works as shown above.

Update: Dark mode doesn't work on Messenger Lite. Tried downloading the non-Lite Messenger on my Tablet and I managed to enable Dark mode on it.

Works in Greece as well. But the contrast of pure black (RGB 000) with messenfer's overly bright bubble colour choices actually makes it worse for the eye instead of better. It exhausts you. But since it's a work in progress, they'll adjust things I guess.
