MediaTek is working on a 5G-capable chipset built on a 7nm process

06 March 2019
It will top the Helio P90 and may feature Cortex-A76 cores (the P90 is built on a 12nm process and has two A75 cores).

Kangal, 07 Mar 2019MediaTek chips have a lot of less fine tuning and quality c... moreTechnically, Mediatek has all you think they haven't...
Since P60, they even carry not one but 2 DSP...

On P90 and G90/G90T, they even use dedicated inference hardware when most of AI is based on DSP/GPU on Snapdragon.

You should see speed test on Mi9T and Note 8 Pro...
In 12nm and at 2.05ghz, Cortex A76 on G90T manages to be faster than Kryo 470 Gold (copy of A76) in 8nm and at 2.2ghz.

About kernel sources, now you can find them for devices with nearly all Mediatek's soc...

True, devs seems to doesn't care...

MediaTek is leading the industry. It has built a pretty strong contender.

Why do people hate meadiaTek so much?

I have used a couple of phones with old MTk SoC and all of them were super cool in terms of gaming especially. For example the phone I am using right now(only 1.5GB ram, galaxy grand prime plus) can run PUBGM in Balanced graphics without any issues. No massive heating too.

IQLogic, 07 Mar 2019No, you just don't get what he's talking about :) If you talk of rooting the device, that group is a outnumbered minority... Drivers? Well I can see that being a issue for OEMs and custom ROM makers tough why should the average consumer even care? :3

Is it "... 5G devices in the second half of 2020." or "...2019."?

Kangal, 07 Mar 2019MediaTek chips have a lot of less fine tuning and quality c... moreSo true.

Kangal, 07 Mar 2019MediaTek chips have a lot of less fine tuning and quality c... moreTotally agree with you

MediaTek chips have a lot of less fine tuning and quality control for the "Systems" within a SoC (DSP, DAC, BT, Wifi, 3G, LTE, GPU, Memory allocation, and Thermal management) than the likes of Apple's and Qualcomm's chips.

So even if they manage to throw a 7nm TSMC wafer, with 2.8GHz Dualcore Cortex A76, and 2.0GHz 6-core Cortex A55, and a beefy Mali-G76-MP8....its not going to matter too much.

Especially when there's no documentation, drivers, or sources. Where the OEM and Chip manufacturer is hostile to developers and enthusiasts. To the point that there's virtually no Custom Firmware for these devices.... it becomes an exercise in futility. And to add salt into the wound, these devices usually have bugs which don't get fixed by the OEMs, and they almost never get updates. Until MediaTek changes, the user experience itself won't change.

                                    I see it...

                                    Helio X40
                                    - 2X A76 @2.5Ghz + 2MB Cache
                                    - 2X A76 @2.1Ghz + 1MB Cache
                                    - 4X A55 @2.0Ghz + 1MB Cache
                                    All with 4MB L3 Cache.
GPU: Power VR Furian with 500 GFlops minimun

                                    And if this not works
                                    Helio P100
                                    - 2X A76 @2.6Ghz + 2MB Cache
                                    - 6X A55 @2.1Ghz + 1.5MB Cache
                                    All with 3MB L3 Cache
GPU: Power VR Furian with 300 GFLOPS Min.

                                      It'll probably be 2x Cortex-A76 @2Ghz + 6x Cortex-A55 @1.8GHz

They better not screw this up
