Arif238, 07 Mar 2019That same unlimited plan cost £1.52/month in India. Wow, that's incredible! £1.52 per month Wow!

"longer replacement cycles"
Bullshit, the quality of phones is worse than ever. They break easily, batteries drop dead after just 2 years, updates make them slower and slower (intentionally). My next phone will be a feature phone.

Anonymous, 07 Mar 2019looking back 10 years ago, people would go grab a 2-3 years... moreAgree, There used to be BIG changes from one year to another back in the good old days haha.
I'm using the S8 Plus since launch and still runs really well, Yes, the battery has degraded a bit but I'm happy to continue with this phone for the time being. There is nothing on the market that is making me say to myself "wow, I must have that phone, and I must have it now!"

Just get back to producing smartphones and not the useless phablets. There's literally just one company left that produces actual smartphones that are comfortable to use and not oversized.

Present phones are still awesome.
Having Lenovo Vibeshot and Moto X4 both works like a brand new no issues.
Aprt from fact on my vibeshot i had to swap battery once because i am a heavy gamer.
But still the 2015 phone works like a brand new.
No scratches no dents no klaggs, bugs or freezing.
Moto X4 is even swifter.

looking back 10 years ago, people would go grab a 2-3 years contract and tie with a smart phone, not a lot of people can wait for 2-3 years as the newly launched phones were much better than its predecessor. I remember my Samsung Note was struggling to play a MP4 file and then my Samsung Note 2 LTE was so much smoother with Quad core CPU. If you now own a SD820/821 phone, I am sure the phone is very useable and support 4G. There is nothing else that is laggy unless you want to play the latest games. Smartphone has reached its peak, everybody needs one and that's it.

Makes sense for many people to hang on to their phones for longer and just opt for a SIM only deal instead. E.g I'm on unlimited texts, unlimited calls and unlimited data (3 network UK) for only £20 per month.

Main reason is the price. $1000 USD for a flagship phone is absurd.
$600-$700 USD is the right price and $800 USD should be like extreme pricing for a smartphone. It's a smartphone not TV if you are expecting them to upgrade their phones every 2 years then at least put some reasonable price tag. Otherwise human can survive even in the worse case scenario and smartphone doesn't even come close.

Yeah because phones are getting to expensive and phone network companies keep you longer on a contract so people are keeping their phones for long. Make me laugh big companies the government. keep putting stuff up people can't afford it the average flagship phone is £60 plus a month. So people are keeping their own old phones and going on SIM only deals. And the cost of living gone up so people expect you to buy these expensive phone still.

"an estimated 1.39 billion units will be moved in 2019"
Wow, that is still a lot of smartphones in a year. I would not of guessed that high. Incredible, even considering that the world's population is roughly about 7.5 billion.
