People want longer zoom ratios that current tele cameras offer. But people also want high quality images.

    This poll was made too early. If the same poll was made after the release of P30 Pro, at least 60% people would've voted in favor of it. The 5x optical zoom of the P30 Pro literally crushes the competition in both quality & quantity. The results are truly mind-boggling. Anyone who says otherwise is straight up lying.

          The title says: "periscope cameras will be a hit".
          No they won't. 60% of the responders are not excited, at least not in the current fixed focus length implementation.
          And indeed, a normal telephoto 80 mm equivalent lens is much more flexible than a 160 mm equivalent lens.
          Smooth zoom would require more lenses, causing even more loss of light, so I don't see this as a winning option, unless people finally drop their wish for even-thinner phones and acknowledge the laws of optics. Sure, smooth zoom will be possible even at those tiny sizes, and the first implementation will be universally acclaimed. But will image quality be great? I doubt it. Even now, since fixed telephoto lenses use tiny sensors, you sometimes get better images by just cropping an image from the main sensor.
          Unless people recognise that image quality is firstly achieved through larger sensors, larger lenses, and corresponding camera bumps (or humps), sensor arrays are the future. But again, the first implementation (Nokia 9) is to some extent lacklustre.

            So I know a thing or two about photography..
            Also, no matter what phone you're going to use, it can't achieve what per example my Canon 600D can do. Also, a DSLR has lenses that can be switched and attached.
            I dare you to take some macro shots. You can use whatever phone you want..
            You are embarrassing yourself. Out of all the people, you had to choose a professional photographer to teach :))
            Your ideas work on people without any photography knowledge, but not with me..
            To achieve DSLR quality you physically need multiple thick lenses. Get it?

              Anonymous, 24 Mar 2019so you know nothing right now,becase in computational photo... moreOh puhleeze. Educate yourself first how to truly use a dSLR and not just buy one with kit/stock lens while never growing up and improving your photography skills to ever leave full auto mode.

              Low light photos and blurred backgrounds captured by a smartphone's computational photography is GARBAGE compared to what you can achieve with a dSLR with a bright f/1.4 lens. And it doesn't have to cost you $1,000 and it doesn't require you to dump and buy a new device annually! All you need is some basic photography skills and if you spend even just an hour each day learning the basics of photography, you'll never waste your money on a smartphone again with ZERO manual camera controls.

                1) except Canon, all sensors come from Sony. They do not want to lose sales of pocket cams to cellphones. Cybershots are still popular in Japan. So no way they sell these sensors.

                2) Because it is much easier to make a Nokia 9 cam setup than Nokia 1020. Also much cheaper.

                3) bigger sensors generates more heat.

                I agree with you. I just looked at nokia 1020 prifile. It has 1,04 cm thickness with very short body. So a long 15,8 cm phone would give much more space ..

                  many users like me just want the bigger sensor with high megapixel
                  not 1.1.7 or 1.1.5.....i want bigger than 1 inch and dont care dimensions or weight
                  just want phone with big sensor like 1 inch or 1.5 inch with 50 megapixel
                  in the world many company create smartphone but none of them DO NOT CARE users like me
                  i hate the sony & this tiny sensors
                  create thousands small sensor but dont create one big sensor for smartphones
                  we dont need zoom and dont care this... in the reality cameras with superzoom are inexpensive & unimportance but cameras with big sensor like medium format is exspensive & important
                  today camera zoom trend in smartphone cameras is mistake and should trynig to upgrade camera quality with better & bigger sensor
                  at least comanys create a line in smartphones models with big sensor & bulky dimension for users like me

                    I went to a library, took a science is fun book, it had projects in it, so I tried them and one of it was periscope and I made it.
                    It had 2 slanting mirrors in a box and you could see image of a level up or down..

                    This mention of periscope cam just brought back some memories. :)

                          So they can give you longer focal length like 100mm or 110 for example.
                          Light comes in , reaches a prism ( little mirror) that reflects light to sensor.

                          Downsides:

                          - more light difraction
                          - smaller sensor required to no increase a lot the space
                          - smaller aperture than usual f2.4 used by most because with longer lenses it is impossible to keep same f without increasing size ...

They struggle like c... moreso you know nothing right now,becase in computational photography,todays flagships can beat most of the dslrs,even thousand dollar one,for ex;pixel 3 can take better pictures than sony a7000 in both day light and low light,this does not mean that smartphones are better,obviously not,but they are really getting close to dslrs even though smart phones are way more cheaper than them

                                For me, one device that can capture a good picture is enough. Point and shoot.

                                Of course dslr and mirrorless are much better but they're not versatile and they have learning curve.
                                also Talk about the extra weight and space everytime you bring it.

                                I want the best camera quality, but I don't want to bring extra device.

                                      People still think that smartphone can reach DSLR quality with those fixed focus lens that go 2x, 4x,...,10x. Smartphones can't reach DSLR quality even if you clip lenses on them like some people do. They are good but not good enough.
