Samsung Galaxy A90 video shows a slider with a rotating camera

04 April 2019
Once the slider goes up, the rear camera can be rotated 180° to become a selfie camera.

I'm using my Oppo N3 since 2014 and it works very well. Good to see this feature again.

It's Oppo N3 all over again. Glad to see this feature make a come back.

          too many moving parts

Anonymous, 06 Apr 2019Interesting good idea, except I don't think this could be t... moreRotating point would be exactly middle of the camera (including sensor and lens both).
So, it would have the space if the cam is enclosed in a cylinderical box instead of a cuboid one (as is the case normally)...

We already have a 8mm phone, Galaxy S10, with a very good 1.4um 12 MP camera. And its main cam is not on a bezel, its behind a display so leave 1-2mm for the display thickness...
            So, the idea is workable.

By the way, in my design there's a bigger potential of high quality imaging due to more space available, that too in thickness (which is awesome)...

This design with 2 moving parts is rly bad..

At the very least, I think we need to thicken phones anyways. 4100 mah can fit in a 7.9 mm phone, so we could increase camera quality and battery in one fell swoop

Walter C. Dornez, 05 Apr 2019The only problem I could foresee is I suppose two things 1... moreInteresting good idea, except I don't think this could be the main cam as it would be too big to rotate in an 8mm space, hence this slide & rotate design that we're seeing here.
But maybe could fit a rotateable selfie cam in an 8 mm cavity to supplement the back main cam.

Samath N8 808 owner, 05 Apr 20191. Agreed. Nothing I can do about that. If the camera faces... moreAh, thank you. The idea itself is ingenious though, and if the display can turn off the camera part of the display, the idea still works.

Walter C. Dornez, 05 Apr 2019The only problem I could foresee is I suppose two things 1... more1. Agreed. Nothing I can do about that. If the camera faces both sides, it can't be through a display. Best we can do is make the bezel smaller, or choose a water drop bezel(?)
On low end phones with small cameras, a very small bezel is possible.

                      2. Normally, motors don't fail. Brushless motors are the most reliable on Earth (even for vehicles). For example, a cieling fan lasts years without service. Also, it has to only rotate 180* at a time, nohing more. A stopping mechanism, like a magnet would be needed, that's it.
Of course, a lot of testing is required to be convinced of reliability...

Thanks for your reply... You did make very valid points.

Samath N8 808 owner, 05 Apr 2019My idea is the following:- 1. We have a phone with a top... moreThe only problem I could foresee is I suppose two things
                        1) Design
This idea hinges on the plan of being behind a bezel. This essentially means the design he's to have bezels, which could mean continuity in design, which could translate to lower purchase of it
                        2) the Motor
What if the motor fails inside the device? Thus, you lose both selfie and possible regular photography

Walter C. Dornez, 05 Apr 2019What's your idea?My idea is the following:-

                          1. We have a phone with a top or bottom bezel (not bezelless), this bezel holds a 2 sided internally rotating camera inside it,
                          2. The main (normal angle) camera has a 180* rotating motor under it and it will rotate internally... since motors have good torque, even a 0.1W motor will do well.
                          3. From outside, the body is sealed, no moving components, and has 2 glass windows, one towards selfie side, one towards main cam side,

So, we're essentially replacing 2 cameras with 1 rotating one.

The user may click a button on camera interface which will rotate the camera inside the body itself. On outside, there're no signs of movement, i.e. its a normal looking touch phone.

                          The benefits:-

                          1. Lesser cost & price due to single camera only and not 2 cameras, the motor can be dirt cheap ( < 1 USD industrial price),
                          2. Internal Space saving as the motor will not occupy as much space as a selfie cam,
                          3. Better quality selfie with autofocus, no blur selfies anymore,
                          4. Since there's no display on the bezel area, the camera module can be thick, we can have a high quality 12MP camera with 1.55um pixels and f/1.5 & f/2.4 lens easily. The phone can still be 8mm thick which is not much.
                          5. We can have even a 100MP camera, the motherboard will support it because its just one cam that the motherboard is connected to,
                          6. Since the cam rotates inside the body, the outside body can be durable and waterproof both,
                          7. Quality control is easy because you improve one camera only, its video and all,
                          8. All different modes including HDR will be available on seflie too,
                          9. can reduce number of cameras on flagship to 2 or 3 (total, front + rear)

                          Demerits:
                          1. None I can practically think of. I'm serious. This idea is near perfect.

                          Additionally,
With another super-wide angle camera on the back/ front, you may have a Dualfie setup.
