There are some concerns regarding 5G:

      >>
5G is radically different from previous generations of wireless technology:

Instead of being on private property relatively far from where people live and work, 5G antennas will be on the sidewalk in front of every third or fifth house
Instead of emitting hundreds of watts of microwave radiation, each 5G antenna on the sidewalk will emit beams with an effective power as high as tens of thousands of watts of millimeter wave radiation
Instead of nature being protected, 20,000 5G satellites in low orbit will irradiate every square inch of the Earth

xeroga, 05 Apr 2019There should be another big name which is pushing 5G modem:... moreUnfortunately Intels timescale on a 5g chip would mean a late 2020 release so iphones won't be getting 5g till 2021 as no one with sell to them and mediate isn't up to scratch.

On the one hand, prices will rise up sharply.
But on the other hand, the country will not be allowed to communicate with the USA.
Since Canada's part of the 5-Eyes, that Canada cooperates with the USA's Intelligence and that they are a major trade partner, not being able to do comms with the States is out of the question. So... All I have to do is keep being a Rogers customer and I'll be good. Not so much about millions of people lol.

xeroga, 05 Apr 2019There should be another big name which is pushing 5G modem:... moreThat is possible. As it stands, for the majority of Android phones, they use Snapdragon, so there is much profit to gain from that. But with the rise of Huawei, it is quite possible that they could emulate a similar model, since they've captured major popularity in quite a lot of markets

Huawei will be the big winner in 5g. US cant stop nothing

Walter C. Dornez, 05 Apr 2019Yeah, but isn't that more in a Mobile platform? There should be another big name which is pushing 5G modem: Intel, which will probably be the modem supplier for 5G iphone. As in past generations, I believe Qualcomm will get most of the profits due to its dominating position in the industry and he can bundle the modem with its SoC (using Qualcomm chipset => using Qualcomm modem). Samsung and Huawei can get a tiny bit but their SoC are apparently less popular. Intel can get as well, he has strong R&D, but he had to catch up the development, so I don't think Intel can be a threat to Qualcomm in the next few years. These are all my opinion though.

Walter C. Dornez, 05 Apr 2019Damn. I forgot about that. Curse that proprietary tech! So ... moreNo. The CRTC (Canada's FCC, but less bribed) has the power to force the telcos to trash their Huawei stuff. Obviously Bell and Telus (They both build their networks together) are lobbying hard to not let that happen. But if Trump forces the 5-Eyes to trash Huawei from telecoms (which is a legit concern, 5-Eyes communications are highly sensitive, you can't take any chances), the telcos have no choice but to change their equipment.

That itself is not a problem. They make billions in raw profits every quarter (each quarter, each telco). However, they will use this as an excuse to jack up prices sharply. And this is concerning when you know Canada's got the world's highest prices in developed countries. Rogers is not affected. They use Ericson tech. Maybe a dash of Nokia tech too.

This problem is present in every network that uses Huawei tech. So poorer countries where networks are already bad enough as it is will suffer greatly. Forget 5G, forget LTE-A. All their cash will go to replace Huawei's 4G equipment.

Good move for Samsung and Qualcomm in leading the consumer market with their 5G chips. In the following years, 5G will be available to mid-range and low-end devices and the technology will be cheaper. At that time, apple is still catching up with their entry to the 5G scene with less innovation and aging features. This time apple will be forced to compete with the prices of other brands bcos they cant innovate anymore. It will be a win for everyone. I hope these brands just keep on delaying apple's 5G modem supplies for good. Love from india.

Walter C. Dornez, 04 Apr 2019I feel like if they can make a big enough effort with this ... moreThere is also another supplier of 5G modem: Qualcomm. As Qualcomm is dominating chipset market of android smartphones, I think they will be the final winner of 5G, over Samsung, Huawei, and other potential competitors.

Walter C. Dornez, 04 Apr 2019I feel like if they can make a big enough effort with this ... moreThe fact is that current Huawei equipment is not interoperable with 3GPP equipment.

"A Telus executive not authorized to speak publicly confirmed to MobileSyrup before the trip to China that Telus is unable to use any other vendor’s equipment on its current infrastructure. The Telus executive explained that when it is time to deploy 5G networks, new equipment is essentially added onto the existing equipment that deploys 3G and 4G. Specific to the company, the executive said that it was impossible to use any other vendor on top of Huawei’s existing infrastructure and 100 percent of its radio cell towers come from Huawei. This would mean millions of dollars to rip apart existing infrastructure in order to deploy new equipment that allows for the use of other vendors like Nokia or Ericsson.

Samsung is catching up with the Chinese OEMs.

I feel like if they can make a big enough effort with this and try their hardest, they could really gain a lot of money through supplying countries that won't use Huawei or on the fence about using Huawei
