The analysis says the reason is the weak demand for the XR and XS models. All the people want the XS Max. So RIP compact phones

Xiaomi Mi 9 SE, Samsung Galaxy S10e that has flagship specs and premium flagship price. Mi 9 SE is middle class top end hardware with around middle class top end price. Samsun A40 is budget segment hardware and price of 230 euro and has oled screen.
But thats about it. Sony dont make compacts anymore and buying old makes no sense.
This small iphone for 2020 will probably be really expensive anyways, as it's apple and expecting them to lower the price is for fools.

As you can see and stated this is or will be 2.5 year old iPhone re-released well into 5G.
My contract is two years long, it beggars belief that I would upgrade to phones that were available at the beginning of the contract

Even pitiful amounts of subscription add up a lot.

Also, small devices cost more than larger devices (in tech specs vs. price), it's just physics.

So the new SE isn't a small form factor allscreen phone? All I just wanted is a 17:9 Allscreen phone where the 1 in 17:9 is just the notch with the new version of Face ID camera.

Why couldnt they have kept the old design..make it bigger to fit more battery and screen..or a full edge to edge display..same form factor for 650

I think it's more proper to name this the iPhone 9 instead of the 2nd gen SE. Just my thoughts.
Apple's iPhone line-up has never been more confusing and lost as this. Same as the iPads.

Many people want a compact device, but the truth is these people are tiny percent of the mass which starves for huge display phones. A lot of people don't have computer and use their smartphones as main device for browsing internet and watching movies. The number of these people will grow up and the demand for bigger phones too.
I wanted someone to produce a compact device on reasonable price with mid specs, but this won't happen obviously. Afterwards I realised that there is no need the compact device to be something special and any crap like Nokia 1 or Xiaomi Go is OK for my needs of mobile phone. So I continue using Samsung A3 as my business phone - calls and reading emails on the go. For me I bought Meizu 15 which is relatively compact, but I still put it in the shovel category.
Maybe Apple is considering to produce such device, but the reason for this is definitely not the demand for small phones, but probably availability of displays on stock or possibility to build the device for very cheap and to attract some new users with lower price.

If this has 3d touch, then am in. That's what stopped me from buying Xr.

Nothing wrong with 4.7 inches. anyway whats + - 3 inches anyway? You lose ability to use in 1 hand easily.. to see 1 inches extra??
In fact i rather 4 inches. With decent bezels for the fingerprint in front.
Nowadays phones are a hazard risk of dropping.. See tons of people commute, put the phone on their palm.. slight movement.. the phone will slide off. No wonder, wallet case / huge case makers / ring attachment behind are getting tons of profits.

Then why you need a phone with that small display...
