My backup software also runs over wifi. DroidBoye has valid use cases requiring higher speced usb. I never thought about peripherals beyond desktop docks. As an average user(W10M up until last week), I'm able to get by but it is kind of nuts they aren't using higher specs. How much could it have possibly saved in cost?

I just had a chat with the UK customer service team as their UK site still has no option to buy and they seemed to suggest it could be another week! Screen grab of their reply below. Went into a Vodaphone shop yesterday and they hadn't even heard of it!

Higher maximu... moreI guess a lot of people have tendencies want to save everything only in their phone and don't want use their pc/nb/ufd or another external storage as a second storage or backup. Because they think isn't practical or just too lazy to do that, so.. no usb 3 speed is not big deal for them.
I bet you rarely see here people complaining about usb 3, as long it's type c and have good fast charging they will happy, even though it only have specs and performance which micro usb already have. The most often complain which I see here is about small internal storage and no microsd slot, I think that's in line with my guess above.
And also I think gsmarena review it's weird and less objective about usb related stuff, I never see (cmiiw) they said no usb 3 as a cons in the highend devices review (in mi9 review for example), whereas in the low end review they often said no type c port is a cons.

1. Higher maximum power output. Which means, there's no need for me to add an external psu for my type-c DAC. Well this might not matter for you if you're already satisfied with type C earphones.
2. File transfer speed. I mainly use my phone as my dash cam during my 1 hour or two hour (back and forth) commute so I needed high transfer speed, imagine moving that amount of data through WiFi when you got home.
3. Overall compatibility with type-C peripherals. Mostly, the issue that the type C peripheral is not compatible is due to #1 (low power output of type-C USB 2.0).
I just don't see the point of having a phone with impressive SoC but with weak I/O, the USB 2.0 standard is a huge bottleneck when interfacing the phone to external peripherals, Xiaomi should move-on and I know they can implement better than that.

My biggest concerns were USB-C 3.1 and the waterproofing. There's some videos showing it's at least water resistant, so I'm not as terrified of spalshes, but as for the not having USB-C 3.1, I can tell you, it hasn't mattered at all to me. With 27W fast charging, it charges massively faster than my previous phone. With the onboard storage being so much faster, it actually took me less time to copy my music over to my Mi 9 as my previous phone. I've never used MHL as I tend to do miracast, so that's the only piece I would be missing if it was something I was actually using. What part of having USB-C 2.0 versus USB-C 3.1 are you really going to miss?
