A good read, I don't think Koh's remedies go far enough. I don't know if there is legal precedent to support, but I think Qualcomm's standards essential patents wrt modems should be vacated.

Trump on the other hand HAS had a hand in stifling competition and growth in the market by placing a ban on Huawei products. One that will no doubt get over turned within the next 3 months or at least special exceptions imposed because the orange troglodyte hasn't just affected the US market with his idiotic and rash decision, but the global market...and that is quite unacceptable and a LOT of very wealthy people will not be happy.

I mean, people once had a choice to support other OS's (e.g. Win Mobile, Tinzen) and ISA's (e.g. x86), but they didn't. Android, iOS and ARM remained relevant, now to be hated. It took a drastic situation for people to finally take interest in change and right now as I see it, the rest of the world is hating on the US. But going back even further, didn't it create the Internet in the first place?

I don't like Huawei getting bullied one bit. I don't get why all had come to this. But in turn of these events the world's also going to hate the US. Just got to keep hoping and praying for the better again I guess

It's astonishing the lack of understanding displayed by most posting on this article. I am not sure if their blind hate for Apple is the caused or they just chose to ignore all facts and just rant about Apple anyway they can. You can't look at all the facts in this case and not come to the same conclusion. Ask yourself why 70%+ of Android devices are using Qualcomm Snapdragon chips? Qualcomm is dominating as a SOC vendor because of their IP in wireless.

It's simple to understand. Qualcomm developed its wireless IP and decided to submit it to be included in the wireless standard. Part of the rules when you do so is to adhere to FRAND otherwise Qualcomm submission would have been rejected by the standard body and no one would use them. Qualcomm got greedy and decided to enter the mobile SOC market. To gain market share they decided to combined their wireless ip with their (SOC) Snapdragon and adopted the policy of "No chip, no license." Meaning if anyone wanted to license only their wireless IP they were forced to also buy Qualcomm's chips otherwise the price was astronomical. So, everyone just buys the bundle, it was cheaper and simpler.

Qualcomm has been doing what Microsoft did in the '90s when they bundled internet explorer with Windows to squashed Netscape. They were using their wireless monopoly to forced their SOC onto everyone else. This would not have been an issue if Qualcomm did not have a SOC business or bundling them. What the judge is saying is simple, Qualcomm needs to unbundle those things and allow folks to license only what they want. Everyone will still need a license, except now they won't be forced into buying the bundle if they don't want to, ex... Apple. Apple has their own SOC chip, therefore don't need Snapdragon chip. Apple should be able to just license Qualcomm wireless IP at FRAND cost without any penalty for not also buying Qualcomm SOC.

This will bring much greater competition in the mobile SOC space and will loosen Qualcomm's hold in the SOC market. It is a good thing, and everyone should applaud her for following and apply the law to the letter. Now maybe someone else will step up and create a decent android wear SOC etc.
