A new version should arrive later today, hopefully without this bug.

In exchange of a big buch of money and some favorable trades to manufacture Pixel phones in the HTC facilities.

If you look at the design of the Pixel 3a and 3a XL is very familiar... very HTC... that team designed those ugly phones, at least for my taste. So in fact and as consequence, now, HTC probably has less good engineers and workers, unless they have been able to find and hire new skilled workers. But, at least, they are manufacturing those Pixels phones. About what could happen in the future... Well the time will show it.

That's weird. Didn't Google partially buy HTC to prevent them from going bankrupt? Google & HTC should forever be linked...

            T-Mobile G1
            Nexus One
            Pixel & Pixel XL

HTC was the first to manufacture all of them for Google.

One has to wonder who’s left working at HTC? Are the front desk workers responsible for firmwares now.

Fixing something always have the risk of breaking it. And sadly, companies breaking stuff seems to be a norm nowadays without consequences.

This company seems to be very troubled. The update is very late to begin with, plus the rollout is limited, now it's bricking devices.

No, that's exactly why they released the update in Taiwan first - they have stores there, that can help instantly. If they would have released it to the whole world, they would be really screwed.
