Weekly poll part 2: the best mainstream flagship of H12019

16 June 2019
The prices of premium flagships have gotten out of control - but some of the best phones are their non-premium versions. Let's pick the best.

Mr. Electronics, 17 Jun 2019How on Earth is a Kirin 980 a bad chipset?!?! It's virtuall... moreI think you misunderstood the point.

When talking about these premium midrange devices, you have the option of either the QSD 855 or the Kirin 980. Between the two, the QSD 855 is better. The Kirin 980 is NOT a bad processor. I did do a typo though, it should have read "worse" and not "worst". There's no Exynos 9820 device in this category, they only exist on the Samsung S10 devices, and that's one tier above in the flagship devices (IP68 protection AND top-tier processors).

Follow-up question, what do you think about the order?
I think its correct, but open to suggestions. For instance, the Honor 20 is a great device but certainly worse than its peers here, and the Nubia RedMagic 3 certainly has some flaws but it looks like the best device in this category.

Anonymous, 17 Jun 20191. Screen is more important than sound. 2. Lack of micro s... more ... and even more important is the support some languages
and the needed 3G and 4G Bands!

This chinese Redmi K20 Pro offers none of them!

"- This smartphone is supports only English and Chinese.
And it will be pre-installed Google Play. ((( = coming w/ faked Shop-ROM!)
    - Redmi K20 Pro english and chinese version support the network frequency as follows:
    4G: FDD-LTE B1/B3/B5/B7/B8,
    3G: WCDMA B1/B2/B5/B8, "
... and some useless TD Bands.
    (Source: honorbuy)

That means no support for the badly needed LTE B20 in Europe,
and that pure 3G is not for global use as well.

Promised to ship this week at over EUR 450.

and that useless phone will win this poll. lol

It's virtually the same as a 855 even if the quad clock speeds are just marginally slower. If anything, the Exynos 9820 is the worst from all flagships because of the significantly lower clock speeds and a bigger 8mm build which can result in more battery consumption

Anonymous, 17 Jun 20191. Screen is more important than sound. 2. Lack of micro s... moreThat made me giggle.

I have to re-evaluate my position in this. It's not fair to pit the Samsung S10 and the S10e in this category, and the reason being is the IP68 waterproofing. But they should be replaced with the Honor 20 Pro, Honor View 20, Oppo Reno Zoom, and the Xiaomi Mi9. I think it is actually fitting to include the gaming phones in this category as well.

Now, that we have our (upper) midrange device listed, I would order them in this fashion, without contemplating on the price differences too much:
(best)(QSD 855, AMOLED, microSD, Headphone Jack, Stereospeakers, Big Battery)
          Nubia RedMagic 3
          Lenovo Z6 Pro
          Redmi K20 Pro
          Oppo Reno Zoom
          Vivo iQoo
          Huawei P30
          ASUS ZenFone 6
          Xiaomi BlackShark 2
          Honor View 20
          OnePlus 7
          Meizu 16s
          Xiaomi Mi 9
          Honor 20 Pro
          Honor 20
(worst)(Kirin 980, IPS, No microSD, No Headphone Jack, Monospeaker, Regular Battery)

Again, this doesn't quite take price into consideration, and that may vary the order. However, I think the worse/cheaper devices would necessarily have to become more expensive in order to fit in larger storage (256GB) in order to combat the lack of a microSD slot. A microSD slot is very handy to store your photos, videos, large files, and emulator roms. Also cameras are a tricky thing to evaluate simply from a spec sheet. Thanks to some new updates and detailed comparisons online, it looks like it doesn't affect the result of the list/order too much. Displays can be tricky to judge from a spec sheet as well, and again, there's reviews out there to help gauge things.

This was fun, I think I will do the same "2019 hierarchy" for the flagship phones (those with an Exynos 9820/Kirin 980/QSD 855 processors, but also IP68 protection).

Nubia red Magic or Xiaomi K20 pro are the best among all said phones.
THey have everythinng for that price.
The other phones cost too much and offers nothing worth the extra costs.

For me,it had to be the S10. Two are the main factors for my vote.
-First, it's the physical dimensions. It's rather pocketable, without having a small screen. I wish there was a way to fit a 6.7" in S10's dimensions but there isn't, so I will prefer my handsets relatively small. I really wanted to vote for K20 and Zenfone 6, but they are just so big.
-Second, Samsung made no compromises and included everything I could ask, and I mean those little things that too many manufacturers tend to leave out these days. 3.5mm jack, SD card, wireless charging. These along with all the other S10's perks make a great phone.

But i'll buy the 128GB version of Mi 9T when prices drop enough.

S10 is not premium. hm, something isn't right here

I bet you if people actually voted on the best value to price ratio phone here and not based on brand, Xiaomi and Asus would be both at 40% of the votes and the others would be overshadowed
