Anonymous, 19 Jun 2019Google is the most fined company in the world for a reason.... moreGoogle already gets the data, that won't change, what will change is that because it will be going to finish Google data centres it will be subject to European privacy laws which are better than us laws.

Also the sort of user manipulation that somebody commented about simply doesn't yet exist, FB have dabbled in it but they, and Cambridge analytics got their wrists slapped for that.
When Google start rigging their search results they will open the way for someone else to dominate internet search.

Duck duck go anyone?

Fish, 19 Jun 2019That ''data profiles'' you say are NOT sold to anyone. In f... moreThey don't need to sell your digital persona, they just use it to generate money from it. Also, there is a difference between your personal/user data and a digital persona. Even if you choose to delete your personal data (raw data collected about you), the digital persona is an interpretation of that data and is never removed from google's servers.

Now, what digital personas are used for at google, include:

                          - serve you ads based on your preferences (simple process, i.e. you have a dog, they will show you ads for dog food/toys/accessories/etc.)

                          - add machine learning to generate statistics which are used to sell more precisely targeted ads (say you shop at stores X and Y during 9am to 5pm. Google knows that this means you must work nearby, and since that is a big business district near the city centre, you annual personal income (based on statistics in that area) is most likely in the medium to high range. So you will be targeted with ads for more premium/expensive products. Also, based on the stores you visit, more assumptions can be made (again from statistics) about your lifestyle, healthy/unhealthy eating habits, etc. which generate more precisely targeted ads.

                          - on top of machine learning, they add AI on top of all your personal data and general statistics and create a digital, choice-making version of you. Again, using statistics about the population closest resembling your lifestyle, customer habits, content-watching habits, email scanning, messages scanning, listening on your verbal conversations, they can predict which choices you are most likely to make if you are shown ads A and B, then shown video (youtube) content and suggestions D and E, show you search results F, G, H on top of other search results.

The last point is the one that's actually affecting, influencing, and damaging people's lives. By knowing what triggers individuals to click certain ads, videos, search results, and so on, Google has the ability to target people in such a way that they click, view, listen, and read the content they want to sell ads for.

The issue is that if, say corporation X wants to get more people to buy their products and they are willing to pay Google big dollars to help with it, Google, through machine learning and AI, knows how to persuade individuals instead of people at group level or demographic level, in order to click the ads and/or buy said products.

Another issue with this is for political reasons - as through all this data on what triggers specific individuals to do certain things, Google can target them with specific articles, information, and video/audio content to trigger them to consume more of the political content which generates the most income for Google from political parties and other organizations. Thus, even if something is a lie and is a twisted version of the truth, Google has the means to bias people into thinking it's the real truth.

Imagine doing a google search on a certain subject and 90% of the search results you get are biased towards a certain political party/politician/company/product, and all reviews, news, blogs and stories you get in the first 10 result pages are all about the same view on the matter. This biases people into taking that as the truth, and whoever pays more, gets more people believing them, following them, buying their products, even if it's not the truth they're getting or the best products.

The same system can be used to turn people against company X, or political party B, or politician C, etc.

To put it simply, Google controls the flow of information you get delivered to you online, and has the power to make you think certain things, buy certain products, love certain politicians, hate others, and so on.

This is not a real example, but the way it works: you have a dog. Google knows this. Corporation X or political party A, even though they are shady and sell bad stuff or have a bad hidden agenda, want to get more customers/followers. You will get content saying that corporation X donates to animal charities. You will get content saying that political party A wants to generate laws for free healthcare for animals and to stop hunting and animal cruelty worldwide, even though they know they don't have the means to do any of that. And because of this content, you will be tempted and most likely to consume this content, form opinions, and start buying products from company X, or start following political party A.

Google keeps you ill-informed, while pretending to offer you the best information. Instead, they offer you the information which you are most likely to consume, from whoever pays them more.

sam, 19 Jun 2019"I have nothing to hide." is one of the most stupid interpr... moreThat ''data profiles'' you say are NOT sold to anyone. In fact google uses those profiles to show relevant ads to you. I may sound like a person working for google but please don't make assumptions on your on. They clearly say on their website that we DONT sell data to anyone but it is processed to provide better services. Which services you may ask? for example I search for a store on Maps, and I go there, it will ask me how was your experience which is clearly to improve other user's experience.

Wait... what? To improve security, they use __GOOGLE__ services?

This means that with certainty, whatever data is for Nokia only, is now freely accessible by Google and U.S. government. It makes no sense to do this.

dimz, 19 Jun 2019Isn't that stuff just statistics and usage patterns though?... moreNo. Snowden once said that NSA staff even looks at pictures/ videos for entertainment and all, which was what trigerred him in the first place to go rogue.
They do connect everything they know to the original profile they can spot.

You can of course, save a lot of traffic by disabling stuff and rooting and removing stuff. It definitely helps. But I'm not sure how much.
Because a part of Android OS is closed source for "competitive reasons"... so we can't be sure.

Plus, since 99.99% users will never do the above, USA is hardly affected.

Isn't that stuff just statistics and usage patterns though? Like, not actually taking a look at your content and messages? Yes, on one hand it's a way to profile you, on the other it helps improve certain aspects of the software and fix bugs.

As far as I'm aware the feature can be disabled and if you're uncertain, you can either root your device and install a firewall or use a local vpn-based firewall and block those services.
