It has no official certification, true, but it has been tested by reviewers and survived. So it is possible to have dust and water resistance with popups.

Take the XZ Premium and XZ2 Premium. 5.46" and 5.8" screens. 807 ppi and 765 ppi respectively. Both same resolution, same aspect ratio. The Xperia 1 is 21:9 which is very wide. 6.5" in size. 643 ppi. The ppi density is less when compared to the previous models as the display size is way bigger.

Let's consider the following facts before you give your suggestion :
1) Notch or screen hole ruins media experience. It is annoying to see black spot while you watch videos. Part of screen would be gone while recording 21:9.
2) pop up , rotating and slider cameras dont allow IP rating against Dust / water
3) Sony already had to remove front bottom speaker to trim the bezel. Also trading the 1/3" front cam for smaller 1/4" ( half the size) to trim upper bezel.
We dont not want unwanted touches like seen on Find X or S10+

Then you will say curved edges screen and glass back are awesome…
I will not say this phone is awesome, I'm still waiting to try it. But that's just one design among others.

Lower MP count has faster readout.
Eye AF works with 10fps using AF/AE, not sure if hardware could do same using 19 or 23MP.
Probably next year they will move to the 66MP sensor.
